Bizarre Weirdness on Inactivity

Post by Source »

I'm running the latest x64 Mint Mate on an HP Envy Spectre x360 M6 (2-in-1 convertible laptop).

I don't know how to describe the weirdness that I'm experiencing whenever I close the lid of my laptop and leave my laptop for a few hours so I'm attaching a screenshot of the desktop and here is what happens:

State before I leave the computer: All windows closed. Desktop just has icons for Computer & home folder. When I come back and open the lid, the screen is NOT locked, several untitled folders appear on the desktop, the time/calendar pops up in the corner as if you were to click on the time on the taskbar, a couple terminal sessions pop up, and usually a dialog box with "Add a launcher" or something is open. Sometimes the entire panel/taskbar is missing and I have to reboot to get it back. Sometimes it's there but the main menu button is gone. The first time I saw this bizarre weirdness I thought someone had snuck a trojan onto the box and was messing with me, but as this is a brand new installation only a few days old and I've installed very little, I quickly realized that's not likely (but I still installed/ran finger to make sure there were no weird logins).

Please take a look at this screenshot and tell me if you've ever heard of anything like this happening before and if you know what might be causing it. I have my power settings set to never go to sleep while it is plugged in and to do nothing when the lid is closed (except of course the screen turns off automatically when you close the lid).

I understand that it might sound stupid, but if the lid somehow was touching the touchpad and its buttons, then some random mouse pointer moving and left/right button clicking might occur, and that would cause various menus to appear and random menu items to be executed (e.g. right-click on desktop -> create new folder). Or maybe this laptop model has a touchscreen which could be affected the same way?
