Why no Ctrl Alt fn keys?

Post by oldbrad »

Linux used to always implement Ctrl Alt f1 through f6 to switch between various text terminals. So, for example, in the event of a desktop application crash (that never happens! :roll: ) one could switch to say f2 and then kill the offending app. Or maybe run top or whatever, then back to the desktop with f6

My mate desktop seem to have this feature either removed or broken. Ctrl Alt f4 only works, switching me to a login text term. Unfortunately there is no way to switch back to the running desktop. All the Ctrl Alt f* keys just reflect back to the prompt, except f8 which produces the black screen of death!

Back to Ctrl Alt f4 then Mate appears to be running $ ps -A confirms, but:
$ sudo shutdown now
is the only way to recover, but produces a kernel panic, the only method of recovery from that is a long hold power button.

Can anybody throw some light on how to repair these essential keyboard controls.

Ctrl+Alt+f7 should take you back to the desktop.

Nope, like I said before, Ctrl Alt f7 (oops.. did I say f8) produces black screen of death. Only exit is 'sudo shutdown now', which is followed by kernel panic.

No again:
$ lspci -vnn | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Device [8086:5916] (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

For the record:
Dell Inspiron-5567
Linux Mint 18.1 Serena 64-bit
Kernel Linux 4.4.0-97-generic x86_64
MATE 1.16.2
Intel® Core™ i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz × 4

Out of interest why does process status say tty8
$ ps -A | grep Xorg
1106 tty8 00:01:43 Xorg
