Postby ibbill » Sat Oct 28, 2017 4:50 pm

I have it set to install level 1,2,or 3 updates. I have the following still on the update manager is there any problem for not installing them. Thanks for your help.

I prefer to stay with mint 18 and not upgrade to Mint 18.2 or 18.3

No problem that I know of.

Objection, your honour.
The 3 offered updates are security updates, marked as such by the red exclamation marks.
Not installing security updates is not going to contribute to your system security in any positive way.

If you don't want those types of updates to show, uncheck "Always show kernel updates" found in Update Manager, Edit, Preferences.

Okay thanks for your quick and I mean quick replys. Have decided not to update anything that has a 4 or 5 listed as there is a chance of breaking my system .

Just be aware your system is not as secure as it can be. Kernel updates within the same series you're currently using (4.4) are *generally* safe.

Thanks again I read the site you sent me. I have a friend that just got a computer 1 year ago at the age of 75. I install mint mate on it for her.

She loves it but when she read stuff like this on the update manager. I get a phone call.

1. Unsafe updates could potentially affect your system.

2.Dangerous updates. Know to affect the stability of the systems
depending on certain specs or hardware.

Why these types of warnings. Talk about upsetting non computer techies. I know they have to, but they are scary warnings, even for regular users.
