Login window in 18.3

Post by buscon »

Hi all,

I just upgraded to 18.3 with Mate and everything works fine.

Now I would have liked to test the new login window but I am not able to find it in the menu.
Am I supposed to install it? Or where should it be?

thanks!

Urm isn't 'Login Window' in the Control Panel?

It is in mine - top right corner.

Well that leaves me out of it really although you could check to see if 'mdmsetup' exists in usr/sbin.

If it isn't there I assume it will need to be re-generated which is well over my head.

I don't have MATE 18.3 installed here, but I do have 18.2. Click on Menu, then click Log Out, and click Log Out again. That should take you to the login screen.

what i mean is not the login screen, but the login window where you set the properties of the login.
Based on the new features of 18.3, a new login screen has been rewritten:

That's what i'm looking for :)

I see what you mean as having looked at the link you provided I can state that what I have access to is the 'old' 'login screen' functions.

Not the new ones shown in the link.

Maybe this particular bit has not been upgraded yet? Gone wrong?

Anybody else found this?

At this minute I am running LM 18.3 Mate as a live usb. The new Login Window shows up for me, just as shown in the link by buscon.

Click on the green Menu icon in the Panel. Under Applications click on Administration. To the right click on Login Window. From there you can modify to your heart's content.

Thanks for your answer but unfortunately I don't have any Login Window menu voice in the Administration menu.
Maybe something went wrong with my update process? how can I check that?

ok, i found one part of the problem: lightdm-settings was not installed.
Now I can see the "Login Window" menu voice BUT when i launch it, i get asked my password and after I type it in, nothing happens. even if I start lightdm-settings from the terminal, i get no error after the (correct) password is typed in.

What can be the problem? Do I maybe miss other apt packages that lightdm-settings needs?

Have you done the following in terminal?

Code: Select all

sudo apt install slick-greeter lightdm lightdm-settings apparmor
sudo apt remove mdm xscreensaver

and if you still can't get it to work and decide to go back to MDM, do the following:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install mdm xscreensaver
sudo apt remove slick-greeter lightdm lightdm-settings apparmor
I'm sticking to MDM because LightDM breaks power management in XFCE, possibly other DEs too but I have not played with the others.

Whenever upgrading to a new version of Mint, either by installing or via the update manager, it's always worth reading the release announcement and the release notes.
If you updated to 18.2 via update manager, you had to perform some extra installation to change to lightDM and this was outlined in the release announcement.
