[SOLVED] Parts of the screen are not rendering correctly in Linux Mint 18.3

Post by TheSirion »

Hello! I'm new here (both in the forum and as a Linux user) and I'm not sure if I'm posting it in the right place, so I'm sorry if I should've posted it somewhere else, but here we go:

I updated my computer from Linux Mint MATE 64-bit 18.2 to 18.3 a few days ago and, since then, a weird bug has been happening. Parts of the screen become blurred, specially fonts and icons. And some curious behaviors also happen: if I pass the cursor above the blurred areas, they get "right" again momentarily, and other areas that weren't blurred before become blurred.

For instance, if the cursor is above the Start bar, the icons and the fonts become sharp and well rendered, as they should be, but all the icons and text in the Desktop get blurred, and vice-versa.

This also happens inside software like Google Chrome and Android Studio. It almost makes Android Studio unuseable, since most of its icons and menus are so tiny in 1960x1080 resolution. It doesn't happen in every web page, though. I don't see this happen in the forum as I browse it, for instance, but it happens occasionally when I'm browsing Facebook.

I suspect it has something to do with the video board driver, but I don't know what to do. I'm using a Galax GeForce GTX 1050ti.

PS: this bug doesn't affect games or other openGL applications as far as I could notice.

These are my specs:

Look at the background, specially the folder menu and the Start bar.
(sorry for not posting more screenshots. Seems like doing screenshots also affects this weird effect and most of them "disappeared" or are barely noticeable in the other screenshots I took.)

Have you already checked whether you are using the latest nvidia drivers?

Maybe installing those helps?

Hope this link helps:

I experimented with drivers and this is what I observed:

1. I was using nvidia driver 384.90 (if I'm not mistaken).
2. I switched to nouveau, the problem was gone.
3. I uninstalled the nvidia driver and reinstalled it using this tutorial: http://www.techradar.com/how-to/computi ... ux-1327223
4. Now the driver manager gives me three nvidia driver options: 381.22, 384.98, and 387.34. The last two are both from last november and neither fixed the problem. Now there's only the older one in the list to test and see. If the problem remains, I'll be convinced the problem isn't with the drivers, but somewhere else.

Edit: 381.22 also didn't fix the problem.

Do things change if you try a different MATE compositor?

Update: changing the driver version actually DID solve the problem. I'm using nvidia driver version 381.22. It didn't appear to had made any difference at first, but when I restarted the PC, the problem was gone. Thank you for your help, guys!
