linux-firmware update disables Mate Weather Applet [Solved]

Post by dlguild »

Today's update of the 'linux-firmware' program from version 1.157.14 to 1.157.15 prevents the mate weather applet from obtaining weather reports. I was able to confirm this by downgrading to a working scenario then re-upgrading. I assume there are changes the update provides which are related to the Meltdown and Spectre issues currently plaguing us all. For that reason I have decided to live with the problem. Hopefully this post will assist others determine what is causing the weather applet to fail so they don't have to spend a ton of time figuring it out.

As a side note, I am using Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia 64-bit, Linux kernel 4.13.0-31-generic x86_64 & Mate 1.18.0

I've got the same firmware (really not sure what it does) and kernel

Linux version 4.10.0-42-generic (buildd@lgw01-amd64-007) (gcc version 5.4.0 20160609 (Ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.5) ) #46~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Mon Dec 4 15:57:59 UTC 2017

My weather app is working just fine.

Did you try with a different kernel? I don't run nvidia ... it seems to be a frequent offender :)

Thanks mellobob. I upgraded to Linux kernel 4.13.0-32-generic x86_64 which resolved the issue. :)
