Saving mate panel configuration

Running fully updated Mint 17.3 Rosa 64 bit MATE. I would like to save my current mate panel configuration which consists of top and bottom panels with often-used panel applets and application .desktop links. I would like to save the sonfiguration to a file that could be copied onto another computer of the same version. I have three questions:

1) How to accomplish copying all of my panel configuration settings to a file which can be exported to another computer?
2) How to import that file with panel configuration settings onto a freshly minted computer of the same Mint version?
3) Can the settings from a computer running Mint 18.X MATE be imported using a file from a Mint 17.X computer?

If I'm not mistaken those settings are stored in ~/.config/dconf/user

You can copy ~/.config/dconf/user to your new Mint 18.x Mate, but I would create a new user and copy it to the new user to see if it works. There is a good chance it will not work well.

I think you are right.
I just transferred this file from a working 17.3 MATE replacing the ~/.config/dconf directory in a new user for 18.3 MATE--the panel remained unchanged in MATE 18.3.

Did you log out of the new user, and then back in?

Absolutely--then even rebooted.
Firstly I created a new user on the computer I use for 18.3 evaluation and transferred the ~/.config/dconf directory from a 17.3 Mate system replacing the entire directory in the new user ~/.config directory.
There was no carryover of 17.3 MATE panel settings to 18.3 MATE after logout/login, nor after a full reboot and login as the new user.
I am open to further experiment regarding this

Seems as if someone has usurped my thread? Anyway, is it no longer possible to use a utility like gsettings as was possible in earlier versions?
