I got no idea what's going on, I can't seem to catch a break. Cooling system isn't powerful enough and is noisy which causes very high system temperature. I buy a large EVO cooling tower, desktop's running at 16c right now, works fine. Then my PSU broke, replaced it with a brand new one, it's so quiet, I had no idea a desktop could be this quiet, ever! Works all fine.

The hell is this? I'll post syslog stuff before the last event :

I let some of the lines that follow because they happened while the system had the screensaver on and when I clicked the mouse, I was again, greeted like if I had logged out entirely. I've seen some, not many, people having the same problem, this started basically yesterday. It seems php5 could have something to do with it, other older now inaccessible oldler syslogs always bring up php5 before the log-out and turning off of all the programs I had turned on.

And there it happened right again in my face, it seems to happen when Chromium is running for some reason, it's my second browser, for where my pretty hardened firefox cannot be made to work with a site even if I disable everything. Even the new awful NoScript, I'd still have the old NoScript, as I was running 52.6.0 ESR, but I accidentally hit the Firefox icon on the desktop once and it seems starting 58.0.2 or w/e, Quantum, anyway, makes it so your ESR will reject the add-ons Quantum cannot run. Felt great to still have the real NoScript. Anyway to the point, at 17:42, as I was browsing in Chromium, screen went black, then I was back to the login screen. Looked at the code and that's the more precise area of time I can get..if this is too advanced for here, mods please say so, I'll try another subforum or maybe hit stackexchange.

I know the way I installed php5 was not the usual way, I needed a certain version so I crowbared a version I compiled myself, so I could compile something else. If that's the culprit, I'll delete all php5 packages, purge maybe? But please somebody who is good with internals, I need a solid here.

I realize it happened right after I reconnected to my VPS through openvpn, but it's something I gotta do, a private tracker has banned my VPS' IP address, because it's a shared server and some idiot did something over there that pissed them off, they tell me, you can browse from any non-banned IP address, you can only use your remote torrent app to deal with the torrenting, we're not banning the IP from the swarm.

Anyway I doubt it has anything to do with that, previous occurrences, I logged back in and was still connected through openvpn. Something sets this thing off and I can't figure out what. It seems to dislike Chromium for some reason...maybe I'll get that PPA I used to have installed that would install dailys and see what happens.

...and again, Chromium was not running so....

I think I found the crux of the problem in the syslog

I'm no coder but this maxlifetime and sessionclean parameters seem strange, this never happened to me before and it's a real PITA. Please help out whoever can!

Total guess on my part, but it looks like your VPN is crashing.

Nah, as I log back in, the lock is still on the ethernet icon at the bottom right. I removed php5, the package, and we'll see. This shows up all the time and those 2 things, they are files.

Hasn't happened again since I removed the php5 package.

Whatever that cron job was being performed at root....I don't understand it, I'm pretty good with computers, but it's not how I make my money, pharmacology and neurochemistry is enough crazy language for me.

Now to start Chromium and see what happens.

Well, it ended up happening, only when Chromium was on...which is strange, here's the syslog of the last 15 minutes before being logged out to the mdm login screen :

This showed up again. I looked, maxlifetime is an executable, sessionclean is too. And it's a cronjob once Chromium is turned on? I need some serious help, I don't feel like using Chrome simply. If this is too difficult for most of you here I will take it somewhere more advanced such as stackexchange or linuxquestions, I'm baffled here.

Re: mint (17.1) mate shows a black screen, then back to the login screen, log back in, all programs closed, as if I rebo

I got it to stop by going into etc/crontab and commenting out the line that would be coming back and causing this 2-3 hours logout loop. I slept the whole afternoon up to 9pm and all's good, i stopped the screensaver and wasn't shown a login screen.

Now, why would that even happen is beyond me. This whole root cronjob logout every 2-3 hours...what?

Well, I tried to look up this error:
Feb 27 13:35:30 17 mdm[14989]: WARNING: mdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0

Everything I found was for gdm instead of mdm (and quite old) but...
I have seen nvidia driver "fixes", kernel upgrade "fixes", *.conf "fixes", screensaver "fixes", having "vga=" stuff in the kernel command line, and moving the display manager from rc.conf to rc.local

Maybe as a simple attempt, see if Driver Manager offers anything for your video?

Well...I have a Radeon HD 7870...so no...

I don't know why those session stopper applications were cronjobbed, but I commented them away and since then no more crashing after Chromium has been running for a couple hours. Might be useful to other people what you found there though. Driver5 Manager does offer 3 drivers, the crappy open source one, an old fglrx, I have installed the proprietary AMD driver, first thing I did after installing this Mint instance, version 15.30.1025...there's a version 15.302 but I'm not bothering with it, after that it's the supposedly great but I'll wait until it's been in use for longer open source driver amd released, amdgpu-pro 17 or such, but I don't think it works with my graphics adapter, it being too old by one generation (a 7970 would be fine).

It all turned out to be those 2 exec files that were cron jobbed for some reason, and the job activated by turning on Chromium? Makes little sense, I know, but it stopped once, I commented the cronjob, hm, no in fact I deleted the whole thing and the commented section, maybe I should have kept the comment saying what it's for, but eh...you guys can look at your etc/crontab and see if those usr/php/ files are there when Chromium is turned on.

It's happening, again, but much less frequency, basically being logged out, I even now catch a bit of the internals and not a black screen then the login screen, I saw it closing programs and stuff going [OK].

Looks like it came from my video adapter, just after I installed amdoverclockctrl.amd64, I didn't change anything, I closed it, and 2 mins later it happened, the syslog moment is this, everything afterwards is just my system starting its services successfully and loading up the login screen.
