The below links are just example explanations of this issue that is also in Linux Mint 19 - MATE
You can see the popup error from top image of this link below:
https://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.p ... 474.0.html
"Unable to stop drive
Timeout was reached"
Using Mint 19 Mate Linux 4.15.0-24-generic
Mate 1.20.1
Caja 1.20.2
It's not a hardware issue, since this happens with Mint19-Mate on both laptop and desktop, nor is it my method of removal, since I have never had these "timeout" issues with Mint (Mate)17, or Mint (Mate)18 before.

It's not just "timeout" issues with external USB drives either.
If I'm downloading to my drive, after about 30 min. I get the "Unable To stop drive...timeout" popup up, even though, after a clean reboot prior,
there were no external drives plugged in?.
So something has changed in Mint 19 Mate and/or caja ...?, and again, i never seen these issues before using Mint Mate in older versions.
Mate19 ERROR: Unable to stop drive Timeout was reached ?

That isn't necessarily true.scjet45 wrote: ⤴Thu Jul 05, 2018 11:58 amSo something has changed in Mint 19 Mate and/or caja ...?Code: Select all

sudo apt install smartmontools
That isn't necessarily true either, but if you don't wish to eliminate the obvious...It's not a hardware issue, since this happens with Mint19-Mate on both laptop and desktop
Try an earlier kernel, 4.15.0-20-generic for example.4.15.0-24-generic

Re: Mate19 ERROR: Unable to stop drive Timeout was reached ?
...i think that most likely you are affected by this. Try checking your logs for gvfs-related errors.
If such is the case indeed, this should affect not just Mint and Mate, but other distros & desktops as well.
...See here as well, for Arch & Thunar.
Post #12 contains an unofficial patched binary for Bionic (if you trust such of course).
In any case, it says 'Fix Committed', so Canonical will provide a corrected package anytime soon...

I think you're right regarding this being a "gvfs" bug since it affects thunar, ..., as well.

hopefully it'll get fixed soon.
