the recent MESA upgrade from 17.2.8 to 18.0.5 is breaking some systray icons of applications bundled with Linux Mint MATE 18.3 (e.g. VLC) on hardware with integrated Intel graphics (i915, specifically, using the default "intel" driver). The tray icon appears to be in a black background (on the picture, VLC and Electrum icons are affected by the problem while the HexChat icon is displayed normally):
