[SOLVED] Changing Show Desktop Icon

Post by very »

Having trouble figuring this one out. Most launcher buttons are customizable enough to change the icon, except the "Show Desktop" button. It seems to be different from the rest, and I would like to find a way to change it. I started by looking through all the images in /usr/share to find it, there are some that look similar but I couldn't find the one that matches it.

I've since started looking for the .deb package that contains the showdesktop widget but I ran into a wall there. Most of the solutions I've found online how to change the icon are hacks to bypass the widget all together, i want to actually dive down the rabbit hole and find out the real way to change it, even if it means recompiling a package to do it.

anyone have any advice on where to start looking? package name, or files to start looking at?

thx

I'd like to change the Show Desktop icon also, but I have never found a way to do it (short of changing themes).

There is nothing in either "Help" or "About" concerning changing the Show Desktop icon.

hmmm.

how about create a custom launcher? you could use any image you want for the Icon.
do you know the command to minimize all windows?
On my keyboard Ctrl + Alt + D works for me to toggle but I believe the launcher needs the terminal command.

usr/share/icons/Mint-X/places/32/desktop.svg
but that's just a link to
usr/share/icons/Mint-X/places/32/user-desktop.svg

and you will need to do it in all the sizes up to at least 48

Yeah that is exactly what I was looking for. Started with (back up originals first) changing all 6 sizes only to realize that it was also changing the looks of the Desktop folder inside the caja file manager also. After a little bit of experimenting it looks like
/usr/share/icons/Mint-X/places/16/user-desktop.svg and /usr/share/icons/Mint-X/places/24/user-desktop.svg are used in caja, and
/usr/share/icons/Mint-X/places/22/user-desktop.svg
is the icon for the taskbar.

Thanks a bunch, that really saved me a lot of time :D

No idea. Not motivated enough to look for it.
I was just making a suggestion for a solution.

Greetings! Personally, i don't like to see a genuine topic marked as "solved" when in fact no solution was offered. So i did some digging.

The complete solution to your problem was discussed before @ http://www.ubuntugeek.com/ubuntu-tiphow ... -line.html ... Just to make sure, i checked my systems (all LM18.3-XFCE), found that the "xdotool" was already installed, created a new launcher button on my panel with the command "xdotool key ctrl+alt+d" in the command entry field (without the quotes), chose an icon i liked, et viol'a: my very own "Show Desktop" button.

Since it works like a charm on xfce, it should behave just as nicely on Mate. I might even keep it in my panel since i prefer my own icon over xfce's stock icon :)

in terminal "xdotool key ctrl+alt+d" behaves the same as the desktop icon... but then the OEM desktop icon no longer works

mate launcher with command "xdotool key ctrl+alt+d" does nothing

PS: this is Debian Mate, not Mint Mate

Well, i can't quite help you with Debian's Mate-spin, only with Mint's. Just to be sure that my suggestion is working ok, i rebooted with Mint's LM18.3-Mate dvd (i had reused my LM18.3-Mate partition to install LM19-XFCE), installed the xdotool, created a new "custom launcher" button on Mate's panel, opened a few apps (LO, caja, terminal) and then tested the "xdotool key ctrl+alt+d" button. It worked fine by itself, and also when alternating with Mate's stock "show desktop" button.

The only explanation i can offer is that Deb's Mate-spin comes with different keyboard shortcuts, and that the usual "ctrl+alt+d" is not setup up as such (by Mate, that is). So you'll have to go digging, find your equivalent Mate-shortcut, then configure the xdotool-button accordingly.

Interesting.
I will try again with another "closer to OEM" Debian 9 Mate system and see. The other was Debian Mate proposed-updates Sid.
I will also check for xdotool first.
Debian and Mate vs filtered through Ubuntu then again through the Mint modifications ... Difference are expected.

The xdotool worked like a charm for me! First I created a custom launcher with the terminal command 'xdotool key super+d' and worked in my Linux Mint LMDE 4! It minimizes all the windows. This custom launcher was added to the Main Menu, then I opened the Main Menu, and then I added the custom launcher to the panel.

Thank you for your help :)
