Vertical scroll bar arrows

Post by ZenPath »

Hi
LM19 ('Tara') with Mate.
For a while now, Mate has not included vertical scroll bar arrows. Before I had found a hack that enabled me to include some lines of code which, when I logged back in, magically inserted vertical scroll bar arrows. However, that hack no longer seems to work.

Does anyone know a fix for this? It becomes annoying when attempting to use Thunderbird to scroll through multipart email threads using the mouse to drag the scroll bar down. The arrows were great and are still in use in Opera, but nowhere else it seems.

Thanks for any help.

Greetings!

Your issue may have to do with the fact that Mate has converted to GTK+ 3 (your desktop's "theme" scripting language), and that the "theme" you've selected simply doesn't provide for those scroll-bar arrows (a frequent complaint on many support forums). As a quick workaround, why not just simply click in the scrollbar(s) empty/white space and have the display "jump" up/down in smaller, or larger, increments as you find convenient?

Personally, i find this quite useful esp. with lengthy docs, webpages, or emails. Of course, that doesn't make up for the missing arrows; getting those back and to work is a bit of a chore, but doable if you have the time

Just a thought ... cheers, m4a

Thanks for the reply.

Quite possibly I am old school, but I do like the arrows. Any suggested fixes for the GTK3? I can only track down suggestions for GTK2 and don't want to mess things up by hacking a config file with the wrong instructions.

Old school? Well, don't feel stranded -- i feel the same way :) First, some basics to get familiar with ...

The Gtk+2 scrolled window widgets are discussed @ https://developer.gnome.org/gtk2/stable/ch02.html
the Gtk+3 scrollbar widgets are discussed @ https://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/stable/ch03.html
a VERY handsome conversion tutorial can be found @ http://twicetwo.com/blog/linux/gtk/them ... ation.html (imho, worth printing and/or saving)
and to top it all off, 1000+ Gtk+3-themes can be found @ https://www.opendesktop.org/browse/cat/135/ord/top/

My main question: do you plan to tweak Mint's Mate-theme you have selected, or work with a new theme (possibly downloaded from opendesktop.org)?
