Caja sometimes dies when moving files

Post by CliveMcCarthy »

This has been an issue with Caja for years. When I try to move files with <Ctrl-X> followed by <Ctrl-V> the file operations dialog sometimes stops reporting progress after a number files have been successfully moved and then hangs. The file movement stops but there is no error message and the only thing to do is kill Caja and let it restart. It's a drag. :(

It has happened when I'm moving just ~40 files ~500 MB nothing special. This is a longstanding bug, has nobody else noticed it?

Are you moving files within an hd, or from one hd to another?
The results will dramatically differ.

From one disk to another. Typically a USB memory device to an SSD.

How about a different file-browser (pcmanfm or xfe) or "cp" in a terminal?

Of course I could simply use cp or mv but I'm not looking for a work around, I'm looking for the problem to be fixed. It's a bug.

Nemo has this problem too. I think they share the backbone codes. No fix for many years.

Here's the link of the problem:

Nobody here is going to fix it.

"Nobody is going to fix it" ? What is this? It seems to be a well documented and reproducible bug.

He said nobody here is going to fix it. If you want the caja devs to fix it, then you need to tell the caja devs. And preferably with some more details, which shouldn't be a problem if it's as well documented as you say. Haven't experienced it myself.
