On a freshly-installed Linux Mint 19 MATE system, icons for windows and running applications aren't appearing on the panel; and as a result, it's impossible to shrink and restore windows -- they just disappear from view entirely when they're shrunk -- and applications like touchpad-indicator that are normally left in the background are inaccessible.
What must I change so that icons for windows appear on the panel, and also for applications like touchpad-indicator? I imagine it's something that will be perfectly obvious once I find it... but I haven't managed to find it. Can you help?
