I just love MDM, but it's not supported at all anymore?
with MDM I've always downloaded login-themes from here: http://gnome-look.org/
Is there another greeter that allows changing/editing/customizing the login screen?
and if so, how do I install it and change the login screens with the themes from http://gnome-look.org/ ?
Sure there must be a way.
Can't really understand why they discontinued MDM :/
thanks!

You can theoretically change the greeter the lightDM uses and some of those greeters may support more theming options than slick-greeter that Mint currently develops and ships with . Changing greeter isn't a task for the faint-hearted.
How long do you spend admiring the log-in screen anyway?
You can still install MDM in Mint 18.x and switch to it - it's not actively developed anymore but it is in the repos. It's also possible to chuck it into Mint 19 - see viewtopic.php?f=90&t=274884
