Remember Brightness Settings

On a Tara install, Dell laptop, using Fn and the up/down keys did not work to adjust brightness, so I had to install an app using

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:indicator-brightness/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install indicator-brightness

However, opening various applications changes the brightness back to the previous setting, as well as rebooting the computer (these happened on previous Mint versions as well), and sometimes just randomly it resets. Is there any way to get it to save my preferred brightness setting? Thanks!

Have I posted this in the right section?

Even moving the mouse sometimes causes the brightness to reset to what it is when linux starts. I am also thinking that maybe it is not a MATE setting, but could it be an issue with the graphics card/drivers?

Is it possible a mod could move this to a more appropriate forum if indicated? I'm thinking it's probably not a MATE issue but more something to do with the underlying OS, graphics card, or something else. Also the laptop is getting unusable because it jumps to the brightest setting all the time.

I control my screen brightness manually using redshift. You might consider it a disadvantage that the screen gets a more reddish tint when the brightness is turned down this way, but it works for me.
