Mint MATE 17.3 FAST but 18.3 slow start + slower shutdown

Post by Vilsen »

Hello, I'm a beginner here so I know basically nothing.

I have had Linux mint mate 17.3 for several years now no OS
I have used to has started so fast: it's about maybe 10-15 seconds after POST is complete with the meaningless memory check.
I get to the desktop instantly , generally speaking.

Now I also installed 18.3 but then it takes a lot longer to start.
Why ?
When terminating MINT MATE 17.3 it is even faster ! It shuts down immediately
but now with 18.3 it takes 10 times longer o sometimes it's just "spinning" for endless time.

Same machine, same hardware, joint boot via GRUB.
Can anyone understand why and if there is anything you can do? grateful for advice!

Try a newer 4.15.x kernel.
My in every way weak machine has never been as good as with the currently installed 4.15.0-33 kernel.

That's the usual recommended fix for new hardware, not 2012 models. And I'd be very surprised if it helped.

Mint 18.x uses systemd and some of the defaults for booting are unnecessary for many users and can be modified. Copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here (no screenshots please):

Code: Select all

systemd-analyze blame
Also, you should never expect a newer Linux release to run faster. It may but it's more likely going to be slower.

@ Hoser Rob
Yes, that surprised me, too. After the patch orgy last winter, my system was almost unusable. Before the reinstallation I tried the 4.15.x kernel and all problems were gone.
At least on my 32-bit system.

Too bad you don't hear about the Thread Opener anymore.
It would be interesting to know if upgrading or downgrading the kernel will improve system performance... :?:

Why ? I can not imagine that anyone would like that each time a new version is released it is getting slower
to startup ????

That is what WINDOWS have been doing to the user for decades !!

Very strange attitude.

I did not LEAVE WINDOWS to get in the same mess as before.

Hi Vilsen

Try at first the 4.15.0-29.xx Kernel (was working without any problems on my 32-bit netbook)

Out of pure curiosity I also loaded the 4.15.0.33.xx kernel - it also works... but is actually unnecessary.

Well, security - you load the kernel from the official mint source - there's no more official way...
As always, a backup of your data certainly doesn't hurt

Hi Vilsen, Welcome to Linux and Mint. Ever since Mint 16 came out, Systemd was introduced, along with SysV. Also, GTK3 came in with Mint 18. With Mint 19 they are completely on Systemd according to Distrowatch. That is part of the problem. Have you also gone through your startup programs and unchecked those you don't need during startup? That's one of the first things I do when installing a new Ubuntu based distro.

System > Preferences > Personal > Startup Applications

That can make a difference. Mint 17.3, along with Mint 13, were the two best releases Mint has had in the past several years. I have used 17.3 MATE from the time it was released and it has been a wonderful experience. Unfortunately, Vers. 18/19 are much more bloated and somewhat buggy depending on which release you run. I tired of 18.3's wireless problem and LMDE 3's Update Manager Blacklist problem, neither of which to my knowledge have been fixed. The memory at idle went from 280 MB with 17.3 to 585-630 MB at idle with 19.x. It also depends on what hardware and memory you are using, which for me are Lenovo Thinkpads with 4-8 GB of memory.

I have tried dozens of distros over the past several years. Recently I tested MX-18 Linux which uses Debian as its base. It is a really good distro and uses SysV as the Init Software. I installed the MATE desktop on it and am quite happy with it, even though Debian based distros require a bit more tweaking than Ubuntu based. It runs very fast compared to Mint and has a great set of MX Tools to choose from. You may wish to consider that as an alternative to Mint.

Re: Mint MATE 17.3 FAST but 18.3 slow start + slower shutdown

Post by absque fenestris »

I'm trying to explain a very, very simple update from kernel 4.10 to 4.15...

This alone seems to cause a lot of understanding problems...

Of course very nice people can start now with SystemD & everything & with Adam and Eve... & - very important - don't forget the towel!

... ... ...

The number was 43 - if I remember correctly

Hi Vilsen

In the update manager go to menu > Visa > Linux Kernels.
Choose Kernel 4.15.0-29 (simply click on the preferred kernel and install it...)

At your screen picture: is more readable, yes - but sorry, your systemfont is crap.
Locked

Return to “MATE”
