GUI Lagging on fresh Mint 19.1

Post by lfm »

Folks,

since switching from an ancient Mint 16 (or as it 17?) to a brand-new Mint 19.1 MATE (complete re-install from scratch including manually restoring the relevant parts of /home from backup), my system is lagging continually. I notice these lags during

- scrolling (mildly), e.g. in Firefox, but also in LibreOffice Writer and other software
- while typing (severely), for instance in LibreOffice Writer, Firefox (e.g. Google Mail, Whatsapp Web), Thunderbird - quite often, I can type the characters of a complete line before anything is displayed (but then again, for the next half minute, everything is instantaneous). Especially annoying are the lags occuring during note entry in MuseScore.

Switching between nvidia-390 and nouveau does not seem to make any difference. Should it be true that my poor notebook is too old for a smooth desktop experience?

I just noticed something that might be related: The system is continually firing cpu 4 at maximum load and almost not using the first three cores.

Is this a known problem?

WHere did you get that Nvidia driver from? Driver Manager is the best place to find such drivers, almost always.

That's where I obtained them. Why do you ask - is there something strange about the version number?

I can't offer much of a solution in Mate. I experienced the same thing - particularly the lag in displaying typed text in any window (Xed, terminal, whatever).

Eventually I got so fed up with it I wiped the installation and replaced it with Linux Mint 19.1 XFCE. No problem so far.

just open top in Terminal while you are lagging. the system monitor quite often uses a lot of cpu on it's own just showing you what's going on

I bit of a guess, but since LibreOffice uses Firefox themes, most of the software you mention is Mozilla related, and their software changed fundamentally since LM16/17. If you restored your profiles from your previous home folder it might be incompatible settings or themes.

Did you try removing the relevant hidden configuration folders from your home folder to start with fresh profiles to see if that makes a difference?

Whilst the lagging is occurring, run "top" command (or "htop" if you have that installed), and see what is using the 100% of one of your cores. That is what is causing the lagging, it is normal for some programs to only use one core, depends how the program was coded, but whatever program it is is causing the lagging.
