Can't start MATE

Post by peter_li » Sun Apr 28, 2019 10:33 pm

I installed MATE on Mint 19.1 Cinnamon and installed Mint-meta-mate in addition.

Problem:
In the display manager I can choose MATE but after login the screen content changes for short time and then I am at the DM again where I only can chose a other desktop environment to login.

Are there some additional steps to do?
Which things should I check?

Try this:

login to a plain shell by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 at the display manager, then enter your login details at the prompts and see if you get an error message. If you do see an error message and have a root account, login with the root account to have a look at the stuff in /var/log and or type dmesg | less in the shell to see if that gives you hints about what's wrong. Could be a few things, could be wrong permissions on the home directory or a non-existent home directory.....have a go at the above mentioned things to see if you can at least get into your shell...

It is a relation with vino as I found here:

Code: Select all

May 14 23:03:16 Monastir mate-session[5242]: GLib-GIO-ERROR: Settings schema 'org.gnome.Vino' does not contain a key named 'enabled'#012aborting...
May 14 23:03:16 Monastir mate-session[5242]: ******************* START ********************************

The solution is described here:

So I deinstalled vino which I cant remember that I installed it. And with vino are some other packages deinstalled like mate-themes*

So the question is:
What is the relationship between mate and a VNC program like vino and why did I lost mate-themes*?
