Okay, it looks like gm10's original instruction was appropriate for you. Maybe we should try a different tack. What exactly does this mean:

The microphone icon only appears when voice input is in use and you can mute it with mouse but don't see any key control.
Where is this icon? In some software, or the panel?

Again, the command should be muting the mic, as your output shows [off], even if the icon doesn't change, unless maybe you're using the hardware directly in the software I guess.

I believe it is supposed to act on the default card, but in my case (still on 18.3, so 2016 versions of most software) I have to specify -c2 for my (default) card #2 mixer controls. HDMI is card #0, and that I can understand, but loopback is #1 and I never bothered to configure that otherwise.
Hmm ok. For me with newer software and kernel versions it behaves like a master control and handles them all. You can still toggle individual devices as well but the master overrides it.

Yep, that's what I meant a few posts back with he may be using a different input driver. If he's not going through ALSA then of course nothing of this matters.

I got the answer from another forum. The solution to toggle the microphone is:

pactl set-source-mute 0 toggle

"0" may be a different number in a different system/sound card.
Thanks,

My bad, I didn't realize Mint doesn't have the feature. Apparently the earliest version that has it is MATE 1.21.2: https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-se ... 84f7d64a75
LM 18.3 has MATE 1.18.

I only use Cinnamon, so that is a no go.
