"Add the Xapp status applet"
Hi all! I did an upgrade a month or so ago from 19.2 to 19.3 which went fine, as far as I can telll. However ever since then, there has been a dramatic black exclamation point icon in the system tray area. When I hover over it, it says "Add the XApp status applet". If I right click, I get a context menu which has 'show system reports' or 'quit' as options. If I right click it it brings up System Reports dialog box, which says "Add the Xapp status applet" with some more text and then one button that says "Ignore this problem".
I don't understand what the problem is, so I'm hesitant to click ignore. But if I don't ignore it then I am constantly distracted by this exclamation point that is calling for my attention.
Would someone kindly advise?
Thank you
AH

Re: "Add the Xapp status applet"
Hello, awkwardhelicopter.
Had been effected by this issue as well (really more a nuisance, than a real problem behind it).
Though this thread, [Solved] MintReport keeps on telling me to add Xapp-Status-Applet to the Xfce4-panel, suggests that the root cause has been resolved, this may not be quite true for users of LM 19.3 Mate and LM 19.3 Cinnamon.
Make sure that you have installed the most recent version of xapps-common, which is 1.6.10+tricia. Then the nagging should stop.
In case it does not, you might indeed tell Mint Report to "ignore this problem". This would silence the symptom, without any ill side effect as far as I can tell.
In case you are prepared to do so, you might get involved in this Linux Mint Github bug thread about the issue: Mintreport does report that XApp Status applet is missing even if is already added #39
Best regards,
Karl

Try this command. Post the results in "code"..."/code" tags just like you did for the inxi output there.absque fenestris wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 3:52 pmNo - it doesn't stop. Annoys me for the second time today....Then the nagging should stop.

I'm not sure about Mate at all. I've never used it (well, almost never), and I don't know much about it.absque fenestris wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 4:40 pmThe only upcoming update would be some "traffic analyzer" and that probably can't be because of it.Code: Select all

In XFCE, there's a "panel plugin" you need as well. It's a separate package to install. Under Cinnamon (which I don't use much), the equivalent I think is called an "applet" or something like that and you download it at the same place you add it to your bottom panel/task bar. You need the Mate piece that makes the messages/notifications appear on your panel/task bar at the bottom of your screen. You have an older one now, or you wouldn't be seeing the nag notifications, but Mint is switching over to xapp instead of the previous notifier plugins/applets. It probably won't be happy until the matching notifier gizmo is also installed for your environment.

Re: "Add the Xapp status applet"
I have been using MATE since GNOME 2 left. That should be pretty much exactly 9 years. My Mint MATE works fantastic, occasional hoppers of the mouse pointer because of my high resolution monitor I can patch with dconf.
But this "XApp" - sorry - just the name "App" is annoying. Microsoft, Android and Apple speak. Please talk about programs or applications: App - reminds me of ape and it is exactly ape-ish.
Apologies to all big and small apes and monkeys - they can do as little for it, as all pigs or dogs.

Re: "Add the Xapp status applet"
Out of interest may I add this:
I had this window pop up after updating to 19.3 (Mate version) and I added it.
The result was some panel icons which previously had been small and moveable were now
large and fixed in place; you could not even delete them.
Due to that and other issues I went back to 19.1 for a time then upgraded again to 19.3.
This time I did not add the 'app' and have had no problems since which includes the
absence of the 'ignore problem' etc.
Happy days!

Re: "Add the Xapp status applet"
I agree with leadwtZ,
The Xapp status applet may be the most evil innovation since Unity
I detailed my frustration with scrambled and disappearing Mate icons in this post:
viewtopic.php?p=1835302#p1835302
I was able to remove the Xapp status applet after installing mate tweak.
BTW, It is not simply a "nuisance" when I repeatedly lose my Shut Down icon that I rely on when dashing out of the room, in a hurry.
I just don't want to go there again.
