I have been searching for an answer to that question but google links to a lot of outdated content such as this post at the moment.
According to the release notes HiDPI support it now complete, but things on my 2556x1540 screen are still way too small with a fresh Mint install out of the box. (fints too small, panels too smalll, everything...). How do I find the HiDPI settings in MATE, where is this documented?
Thanks!

Display / User Interface Scale
Then in the pulldown scroll down to HiDPI.

Thanks for the answer! Where do I find the "Display" menu? I only have "Displays" (monitor preferences) with no such option...

In MATE you can find the HiDPI settings in the Control Center under > Desktop Settings.

Thanks absque fenestris!
I take from this that fractional HiDPI has not yet landed in MATE, right? Double is too big for my screen unfortunately...
Iĺl give a shot at Cinnamon, been a MATE user for ages but somehow after a fresh install of Mint 20 I seem to have more problems (other than HiDPI) than I used to have...

Hi fabzi
Unfortunately, the HiDPI in MATE is only very rudimentary. You may also notice a strange mouse pointer/cursor behavior after switching to HiDPI.
If you want to work with HiDPI and fractional settings, Cinnamon is clearly the better choice.
