Re: Mint 20 MATE slow/not working if not external monitor connected
I thought this would be a log where you had to use the power button to stop the session, but it was a graceful shutdown. I am still going through it to see if any of the messages give a clue as to what is happening regarding the two displays not working as expected. I will post tomorrow on what I've found.
I did want to let you know the Linux Mint 20.1 “Ulyssa” Cinnamon released! announcement came out today. The Cinnamon "Edge" ISO is the one with the 5.8 kernel which has the drivers for Renoir.
Cinnamon uses a different windows manager and compositor than the ones used by MATE. I'm hoping testing the ISO as a live session might let us know if a different manager/compositor might help or we need to focus a different direction.
Edited to add: There was a system powering down in the log.

Re: Mint 20 MATE slow/not working if not external monitor connected
The log just goes from running to shutting down. Note below the time stamps between these sequential log lines. 13:44 is when shutdown happened. The "failure" listed is because the system was shutting down and all processes were exiting. I included a later line (after the "...") which indicated the system was powering down. It is possible that's how the system registered you pressing the power button. Everything has the same time stamp, so I can not at this point infer one line led to the next as listed in the log.
The log indicates you have not yet updated the BIOS to the one I referenced earlier in the thread (1.5.0 which came out Dec. 29, 2020). Comments I've read about running Windows on this laptop indicate the laptop temperature is not running as high with 1.5.0 as with the earlier BIOS versions. These laptops are known to run hot and have issues because of it.
This line was in the log related to the BIOS, but it may just be a reflection of how Dell coded the BIOS rather than being an issue.
I found a number of Linux amdgpu bug reports related to having problems with suspend/sleep, so the update may address that as well. While you have not mentioned issues with sleep, I expect whatever change was made to the BIOS would affect amdgpu's ability to function better.
In the comments on this bug report [amdgpu][RX5600M/Renoir/4800H] runtime pm not working (Dell G5 SE), ckane notes, "The biggest contributor to stability issues I encountered with the laptop was that heat dissipation/power management doesn't work effectively out of the box on Linux to keep all components at an ideal temperature, and I had to install ryzenadj and make sure it runs as part of startup in order to control the temp and boost/throttling. For the 4800H I set the power consumption limits at 45W (design TDP from AMD's website) and I set the max temp. to be 85C, which is arguably conservative for this CPU per AMD's literature, but I cannot vouch for the SSD, RAM, GPU, or other components in the system. I've also had it stable at 90C too."
I found some mention of people noticing hard lock issues if they were running on battery that did not happen when plugged in. I presume you have the laptop plugged in, but wanted to mention that as a possible variable.
I did not find any references to people having isses with the laptop screen being blank when running an external monitor. Since I presume both work for you when using Windows, it's possible a reinstall of LM20 MATE migtht clear up whatever is causing the issue. (If it does, it would not be the first time a reinstall cleared graphics issues for someone on this forum.) You had some initial issues because of not knowing the 5.8 kernel was needed, so installing in compatibility mode then rebooting into recovery mode to get the 5.8 kernel and the rest of the updates installed might make a difference.
So I would recommend:
-- BIOS update to 1.5.0
-- fresh reinstall of LM20 MATE
-- try different window manager/compositors (either through testing LM20.1 Cinnamon or changing the ones in MATE)
You may also want to consider monitoring temperatures to see if that might be a contributing factor.

Re: Mint 20 MATE slow/not working if not external monitor connected
I followed your suggestions (kind of). First I installed 20.1 Cinnamon Edge (5.8 Kernel) but there were some bugs when I use it after installing:
Basically, both Cinnamon and MATE work the same, except for the overheating.
Here's the journalctl link for the MATE reinstallation: https://termbin.com/6p53u
- It didn't detect external monitor, but the one from the laptop worked fine.
- When the battery was low (~35%) the hardware stopped working (USB, keyboard), which is similar to some issue you mentioned a few posts before.
- The temperature went over the board (reaching almost 90C in some adapters where the normal is ~70C with MATE) according to the sensors command. Also, I could sense the heat by touch. This is probably due to the higher graphics demand on Cinnamon but it not good the overheating when one is watching youtube videos, as it was the case.
- For booting, I had to set the nomodeset on the grub file, otherwise I couldn't login and the same message as before appeared:
- Driver manager didn't detect any driver missing, even though the System report indicated:
Code: Select all
Graphics: Device-1: AMD Navi 10 [Radeon RX 5600 OEM/5600 XT / 5700/5700 XT] vendor: Dell driver: N/A bus ID: 03:00.0 chip ID: 1002:731f
- Same issue witth the booting and the nomodeset parameter.
- Temperature lower compared to Cinnamon, as expected.
- Does not detect the external monitor, but does not have any issues with the laptop monitor, except that the monitor appears as unknown:
- Same issue with the Driver Manager and the graphics drivers missing from System Report.
- Both kernels (5.4/8) works the same with every bug.
Basically, both Cinnamon and MATE work the same, except for the overheating.

Re: Mint 20 MATE slow/not working if not external monitor connected
When you add
nomodeset
, the system boots without the graphics drivers being installed. That means you are running in software rendering mode and that is why N/A came up for the driver for the RX 5600XT. I would expect N/A would be the driver for Renoir as well. The HDMI port runs off the RX 5600XT, so it makes sense there would be no screen available since the driver was not loaded. Software rendering runs out of the cpu, so that is why the laptop screen has an image.
Driver manager is for installing proprietary drivers such as Nvidia cards and networking devices. Drivers which come in the kernel, such as amdgpu, are not handled by Driver Manager.miguelgb wrote: ⤴Mon Jan 11, 2021 10:04 pm Driver manager didn't detect any driver missing, even though the System report indicated:Code: Select all

Your computer needs to be using the 5.8 kernel. Do not even bother with the 5.4 kernel because it does not have the amdgpu drivers your system needs.
This indicates the laptop is running the September version of the BIOS andmiguelgb wrote: ⤴Mon Jan 11, 2021 10:04 pm Here's the journalctl link for the MATE reinstallation: https://termbin.com/6p53u

Re: Mint 20 MATE slow/not working if not external monitor connected
Yes, just needed the nomodeset parameter. I'll upgrade the BIOS and see what happens. Were you able to boot the LM20.1 Edge ISO in regular mode (ie. not using compatibility mode)?
Re: Mint 20 MATE slow/not working if not external monitor connected
That means you were not able to use regular mode. Using
nomodeset
disables most if not all of the same things as using compatibility mode.I do not know what might have been different for this install than the one you did originally.
Please post the output of these commands:

Below is the graphics information from your first post in this thread. The amdgpu graphic drivers loaded both for the RX 5600M and for Renoir from the kernel. The amdgpu display driver also loaded as did the AMD renderer.

The differences between the two are the versions of Mint, the kernel versions, the Xorg version, and the Mesa versions. The latter two were updates made which apply to either version of Mint.
I checked the changelog for 5.8.0-38 which includes information about changes on the prior kernel versions and did not notice anything which seems to relate to amdgpu.
If you used different repos for the two versions, that is another variable.
At this point, I'll let you decide what you would like to do/try next. It seems it will take experimentation to figure out what is going to work. Based on what data we have seen so far, you could reinstall LM20.0 to see if the drivers install, but if you have a hunch the repos from which you obtained the ISO might make a difference, then maybe try LM20.1 from a different repo.

Re: Mint 20 MATE slow/not working if not external monitor connected
So I tried reinstallling Cinnamon from a different repo, MATE 20.1, check my USB for bad sectors and went back to Cinnamon and still the same everytime. I think I'm going to leave it with nomodeset and using just the lap monitor until there is a kernel update.
Thank you so much for the time and help!

Re: Mint 20 MATE slow/not working if not external monitor connected
I have no explanation for why those drivers are not installing. The latest kernel release does mention updates to DKMS, but I do not know the specifics on it to know if it will help.
Everything I've come across so far on this model indicates the graphics drivers should install. I found quite a bit of info on this specific model on reddit. Most of it was Windows-based, but here is a thread mentioning Linux Dell G5 15 SE (AMD) Linux compatibility (dGPU, SmartShift). The info in that thread indicates using the 5.8 kernel resolved issues, but maybe something else in the thread will help you.
If I run across anything new which might help, I will post it here.

Last kernel update finally did the job! However, I have to remove quiet splash again, put acpi=strict. Besides, the external monitor still is not being detected, but the main one has the correct label.

Re: Mint 20 MATE slow/not working if not external monitor connected
Removing
quiet splash
just gives you the messages on the screen when you boot. You can have both quiet splash
and acpi=strict
as parameters simultaneously; you do not need to remove one in order to have the other. (Just make sure there is a space between the parameters quiet splash acpi=strict
.)_____________________
That is progress in the desired direction. The device drivers are loading for both the apu and the RX 5600 XT, and the display driver is loading, but the renderer for neither device is loading. Your system is still using software rendering mode. I've not seen that situation before with AMD, so I'm not sure what may be happening. Are you getting a "No hardware acceleration" message when you boot into Cinnamon?

Re: Mint 20 MATE slow/not working if not external monitor connected
I'm not sure why, but after putting quiet splash again, the laptop started having the previous issues again. I try rebooting the system 6 times and still it failed on something (did not open programs, could not update-grub, the keybord failed to respond, etc). I took it again and after 3 reboots the system is working fine, except for the external monitor issue.
I updated the BIOS and, like you said, the temperature is considerably lower (the temp on the past post was for an instant when it was, by coincidence, at its highest). Before the BIOS update the average temp was 90C, now it is ~65C.
Cinnamon has this choice of software rendering and I have better chance at having the system working with that enviroment option enabled. In the default option (no software rendering) the laptop has the issues described above.

This link What do the nomodeset, quiet and splash kernel parameters mean? indicates themiguelgb wrote: ⤴Thu Jan 28, 2021 12:25 am I'm not sure why, but after putting quiet splash again, the laptop started having the previous issues again. splash
relates to the splash screen, so I guess it is possible the loading of the graphics drivers is running into an issue because of the loading of the splash screen. The keyboard could be related in that X Server handles all the inputs including graphics, but not being able to update grub seems to be a different issue. It is possible you have done so many hard power-offs that the files system might be corrupted in places. Those types of issues can often be corrected with fsck
, but the hard disk has to be unmounted for the corrections to be done. We usually recommend booting to a live session of Mint on a usb (which leaves the hard drive unmounted) to run fsck
on the hard drive's partitions. Those are literally the numbers I saw for that BIOS change, going from 90's to 60's, so your laptop is responding similar to others of that model.
The latest inxi you posted indicates the Renoir apu is rendering the graphics and the computer is not running using software rendering. That's progress in the desired direction.

I noticed the on the Dell site there was an update this month for the Hynix. I have no idea if that might have any effect as I've not yet looked into what the changes were.

I run
and got:
I guess that means not one file is corrupted?

Re: Mint 20 MATE slow/not working if not external monitor connected
That looks good to me.
Hopefully the system is now consistently booting with the graphics drivers loading.

Re: Mint 20 MATE slow/not working if not external monitor connected
I'm afraid not. I still have to force power off most of the times and keeps failing at some programs (anything related to webcam, for example). Sometimes it just freezes at start up.
I also checked the Hynix update, but apparently it doesn't apply to my SSD.

Re: Mint 20 MATE slow/not working if not external monitor connected
Today I had to force poweroff 5 times before it got run OK. Fortunately, this time the System Report detected an error (keyboard):
