"update Manager" icon is now black&white in 20.1? (Solved)
In 19.3, didn't this used to be green or red depending on whether there were updates available?
Or is this configurable? I've looked and cannot find where.

It's fine the way it is. An orange dot will be in it when updates are available, and when it's checking for updates, the shield is half black/white - no worries.

I also prefer the old update icon, but can't be bothered/had the time to go trawling through /usr/share/icons to find it and replace it.

I had similar problem with Manjaro Mate. I finally changed the icons in icon folder to the one I wanted.
1. First you need to know the name of the icon set you are using. (mate-appearance-properties->theme->customized->icons and find out which icon set you are using)
2. look for the icon folder:
two possible location:
/usr/share/icons/<your icon folder>/16/status/ #if you are using system icons
~/.local/share/icons/16/<your icon folder> #if you are using custom icons
3. gointo the folder. search for files with:
mintupdate-
After replacing the files with the one you want, then go back to step one, in icons tab, click a different icon set, then click again the one you use. Now the update status should change to the one you modified. Note that mine is size 16, if it doesn't work, you might have to try different size.

In Preferences open Appearance properties (Appearance on the menu) then on the Theme tab press the Customize button and switch to Icons tab now use Mint-X or Mint-X-Dark icon theme.
you will get back the old update Manager icon and a better looking icon set IMHO.
If that doesn't work give this a look viewtopic.php?p=1876730#p1876730

Hi, thanks for this suggestion; unfortunately, changing to Mint-X didn't seem to work for me. ( It was already set to Mint-X)

Re: "update Manager" icon is now black&white in 20.1?
My bad, I didn't take into account that I use the BlackMate theme which will change the tray icon. It must be installed on Linux Mint, it's in the mate themes package, you can install it using Synaptic Package Manager. Search for mate-themes and install the mate-themes package, not the Ubuntu-mate-themes package. With that I use the BlackMate theme and the Mint-X-Dark icon theme.
