Mate panel intermittently invisible

Post by HDC Member »

Hi,

Mint 20.1, Mate Desktop (User for several years, upgraded with fresh install from previous LTS about 2 weeks ago.)

Periodically, with no apparent relationship to activities, the mate panel becomes invisible. It is not configured to auto-hide. Clicking in the bottom-left where the menu is known to be will launch the menu.

A reboot brings it back again.

Tried with and without compositing.

Any ideas?

You can reset panel to defaults:
mate-panel --reset
It's a full reset, all customizations will be lost.

to kill current panel:
killall mate-panel

it should restart itself.

I had a machine that did that, But I don't remember if it was in 19.x or 20.x

I assume you know how to use Desktop Settings (it's in the Control Center)
I stopped the issue by changing the Window Manager to Metacity + Compositing (Desktop Settings > Windows). Then log out and back in. It just might work for you as well if not you can always change it back.
Come over to the Darkside (we have Cookies).
