Considering the 5.8 Kernel. Should I wait until Mint 20.2 arrives?
I've been using the 5.8 kernel in my Mint Cinnamon setup for a while with no issues. I've been considering doing the same with my Mate setup which is my primary system for day to day work. Should I wait until after the Mint 20.2 upgrade arrives, reportedly soon, or wouldn't it matter?

Re: Considering the 5.8 Kernel. Should I wait until Mint 20.2 arrives?
I'm having display issues with my Mint Mate system. Wanted to see if the 5.8 kernel might resolve them.If the current kernel on the MATE system is working without issues, then there is no need to even bother considering another kernel.

What issues? If running a later AMD system, maybe, if nvidia graphics, probably not.
Thinkcentre M720Q - LM21.3 cinnamon, 4 x T430 - LM21.3 cinnamon, Homebrew desktop i5-8400+GTX1080 Cinnamon 19.0

It is a later AMD system with a Radeon card. Issues include random distorted displays, windows opening with nothing in them, ghost images. Takes about two days of uptime before I see anything weird and not occurring with any particular program. Logging out and back in generally corrects it, but that can be a nuisance. I've got the same Mint 20.1 Mate system running on two other computers that run almost 24/7, neither of which exhibit any issues. What issues? If running a later AMD system, maybe, if nvidia graphics, probably not.

hi, did you find out what Kernel Mint 20.2 will offer? 5.4 and ??
Re: Considering the 5.8 Kernel. Should I wait until Mint 20.2 arrives?
So it works with your hardware.
It wouldn't matter. Mint 20.1 has an ISO with 5.8 kernel, but only for Cinnamon, so that probably won't be there for Mate in 20.2 anyway. Do a Timeshift backup just to be sure, install a 5.8 kernel, reboot, and see what happens. You can always boot into the previous kernel at boot phase by pressing ESC.I've been considering doing the same with my Mate setup which is my primary system for day to day work. I had Mint 20 on my laptop with recent 4700U AMD hardware and put the 5.8 kernel on it. When Mint 20.1 arrived, I updated in place as per the instructions, i.e. with no reinstallation. The 5.8 kernel was still running after the update. So I'd expect the same to be the case with 20.2.

so 20.2 should get 5.11 at some point.

Yes, right now EDGE is 20.1 with a 5.8 kernel. We’ll wait for three things to happen before refreshing it:
– 20.2 stable (this should happen very soon)
– HWE to move from 5.8 to 5.11 (this is planned upstream for 20.04.3 which is due in August)
– Common proprietary modules in 20.04 to support 5.11 (NVIDIA, Broadcom, etc..)
We’ll then issue a Mint 20.2 EDGE ISO with a 5.11 kernel.
