control center access

Post by antcj »

I'm on LM mate 20.3
For reasons unknown I cant get to control center via the menu.
When trying to do so nothing happens.
I can get to the various sub categories via menu .

Any ideas on this would be appreciated

1. sudo apt-get install --reinstall mate-control-center
2. Boot from the flash drive, check the partition for errors in GParted.

Invoke the Main Menu editor. Click System (under Menus:, list on the left), then click Control Center (under Items:, list on the right).

Click the Properties button, then in the pop-up window make sure /usr/bin/mate-control-center is in the Command: field.

You can confirm the presence of the executable file:

Open a Terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T) then copy-and-paste the following line into the Terminal, then tap Enter...

Code: Select all

which mate-control-center
It should show /usr/bin/mate-control-center. If it shows anything different, your system has been modified.

You should be able run Control Center from the Terminal command-line:

Open a Terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T) then copy-and-paste the following line into the Terminal, then tap Enter...

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/mate-control-center

If Control Center doesn't pop up, look for an error message in the Terminal

Have you been cruel or naughty toward your Mint installation?

We're talking about a standard app and lib file, so something is askew. Something low-level.

A web search doesn't indicate an uprise of this problem, so it may be unique to your system, or your use of it.

Since I can't take a close look inside your setup, it would irresponsible of me to take shots in the dark.

Thats very funny:)

i haven't been into control center for a while.
What caused me to look in there was after an attempt to get onto lm 21. via upgrade path.
It failed horribly, ending in a timeshift restore.
May have been something to do with that.

I did attempt a 2nd go at the upgrade with a 2nd fail.
The result both times ended with no ethernet and i also noticed Libreoffice was borked.
I successfully upgraded my laptop so im sure its not something i was doing wrong.

And yes there were error messages but i cant remember what they were. I would have to attempt a 3rd crack at it and take pics.

That jibes. Both a system update and TimeShift restore will overwrite system files.

TimeShift has its flaws too, which seem worse as we may turn to it under panicky circumstances.

I'm relieved that I needn't notify your local Mint Anti-Mischief Envoy. The paperwork is hell.

Hi Hglee,

I don't know if you ever solved your Control Center access problem, but I just went through the same issues. I'm running Mint Mate 20.3; I attempted an upgrade to 21.1 and several things that I've configured over the past months and years became broken. I retrograded using TimeShift and suffered the same error you listed when trying to start Control Center from the Command Line: symbol lookup error: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libmate-slab.so.0: undefined symbol: g_bookmark_file_get_modified_date_time.

I opened Package Manager and searched for libmate-slab. two hits: libmate-slab-dev and libmate-slab0.
I selected a re-install for libmate-slab0, and Control Center is again functional :)

Kinda late I know, but it may help you. And possibly others...?
Best Regards,
Timothy.
