themes install problem
Posted: Wed Sep 26, 2007 8:12 am
I have a large number of themes in various packages - tar, tar.gz, and zipped - There seems to be no way to install - I tired adding them - no luck and also tried dropping them into the window and same - file format error or some such thing. Any clues as to what is wrong or how to rectify this? Thanks.

Can you post a link to a theme you tried to get working? Maybe someone could then take a look and find out what's wrong with the file.
Usually themes should be in *.tar.gz package and that package should not be 'nested', e.g. yet another *.tar.gz inside of it .... that would be wrong. So that *.tar.gz package should contain everything. All you'd need to do is to drag & drop it into the "Themes" > "Add" preference window ....
So if this isn't working then maybe there is something not yet right about that theme package.

I downloaded them from Gnome-look. gnome art and another site. everyone seems to have a problem. We have major storms due here anytime - I will have to shut down and then come back online when they are finished. I will find a few of them and then post them.
I noticed that there is no dot before the tar.gz and when I replaced it by renaming that did not work either.

Ok - go to Gnome-look and on the first page there, there is Kougyoku-Black. I downoaded it to my desktop and tried to add it as in add a theme...and file error!
So this is what happens.
hope this helps you to help me figure this out.

Ok still have issues - I have a few that worked; But I have a whole folder or two that have errors. and the thing is - in the past most of them worked...
I did have some that never did; but not this many.
is there maybe an extension problem?

Kougyoku-Black has 4 different themes in the tar.gz and 2 emerald themes.
It is also meant for XFWM and not Metacity so it doesn't have any index.theme files needed by Gnome.
Cop these folders to /usr/share/themes then open Theme Preferences.
Select Customize and you should see the theme names under Conrtols.

But I am a total new person to Linux and Mint. Not sure what to do from the instructions you gave me. also How did you find out what was in there and also what that all means?
I have a folder of maybe 119 themes of sorts - some metacity, some GTK1 and some GTK2 believe it or not. I asked a question here about which themes do I download that will work but I do not think I ever got an answer so I tried to do the best that i could from the various things i found on the Ubuntu site and other sources.
Thanks for your help.

To install the Kougyoku-Black themes I right clicked and click extract here.
Then used Alt+F2 to run gksu nautilus /usr/share/themes
Then I open the Black_and_Graphite folder and selected all folders.
Then draged them into themes folder that open with the Run Program app.
Then I opened Theme Preferences and click Customize on the current theme.
This opens a new window called Controls which had the new themes in it.

Ok thank you Merlwiz. I am having a hard time learning all of this stuff. Overwhelming you might say.
