Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork
Maybe try using the Mint Incoming repo instead of Latest?
Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork
Ok, Stefano, I'll try the actual debian repositories and will report back.
It might be worth mentioning here (http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/download) and here (http://mate.karapetsas.com/) that ftp.XX.debian.org wheezy repo is required for installation of MATE on LMDE, as I have not seen this documented anywhere. In fact, it is well-documented that the repos on a fresh LMDE installation need to be changed to linuxmint.com in order for the update packs to work. No wonder I couldn't figure this out--I'd never guess that after getting the update packs I'd have to change the repos BACK to the debian.org originals in order to install MATE.
edit: I'm tired and a bit frustrated. I guess I'll just stick with Gnome2 for now (still the default on LMDE). I'll be seeing MATE again when I can no longer use Gnome2 on LMDE. Thank you very much for the help, Stefano. I'm glad we have MATE.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork
i believe the problem bdantas is facing emerges from the fact that debian.linuxmint (latest) saw it last update last august and so it "understandable" the unmet deps he is seeing. (in my lmde tracking straight testing i see no issues with mate atm).
the good news is that debian.linuxmint (latest) is about to be updated (with UP4) just when lmde is going to lose gnome2.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork
Thanks for the input, zerozero. I understand the issue now. I still think I would enjoy the closure that installing MATE would bring. What would be the advantages and disadvantages of bypassing the update packs and tracking Debian testing directly (via debian.org repos)? I'd want to make sure that my linuxmint.com LMDE repos would coexist in harmony with the debian.org testing repos but I currently do not understand the relationship between them. Would you help clarify and/or point me to the best documentation? Also, if you don't mind sharing, it would be tremendously helpful to know what your /etc/apt/sources.list looks like and why.
Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork
I've installed MATE on a LMDE system and I must say it looks good so far. Nice work. I was particularly pleased to find the "open terminal here" extension for caja.
I do have one question - how do you remove default icons from the desktop? I just can't find a way to do that.
Apart from that the only issue I have is poor performance of Compiz. Several processes are eating up my cpu time and a new one keeps starting and disappearing all the time in the System Monitor. Unfortunately, right now Compiz is just not usable for me. Sure, many Compiz effects are just eye candy, but some of them are actually useful. And besides, what's wrong with some eye candy?

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork
bdantas,
these are my sources.list in my main lmde system (the one pointing straight to testing)
mate runs great and i have no special issues with it (compiz is still a bit heavy on cpu usage but a killall -9 marco solves the problem - i hope stefano will address this in time);
now, be aware that if you choose to track testing you might meet some instability and eventually breakages (due to the nature of the release itself and nothing to do it mate);
- if you decide to stay with the UP (debian.linuxmint) it's possible that sometimes (like now) you'll face some incompatibilities, because your repos are frozen in a given snapshot (the last one from the end of aug/2011) and mate's repo is continually updated.
- all of the above will change soon with UP4 (we are testing it atm in incoming, so soon enough it will be available in latest); by then mate will be part of the linuxmint repo so if you want stability, don't want to mess your system, wait a few days maybe a couple weeks and mate will installable without conflicts in the latest repos

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork
Yes, high CPU usage with compiz, is the biggest problem with me , also.zerozero wrote:..................................

I like MATE, just don't use it because of this problem.
Thanks for the killall -9 marco tip, 'zz'.
Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork
Thank you very much, zerozero. I feel enlightened I am aggressive in my curiosity, but otherwise pretty conservative. Now that I get it, I can rest, enjoy the added stability of latest, and wait for UP4 and MATE. I've considered using straight Debian with MATE on my system, but LMDE feels right. The efforts of the Debian team are obviously indispensable, but it is clear that LM adds tremendous value (functionality, stability, ease of installation, ease of use, user-friendly forums, beauty). I really appreciate your excellent work and am happy to support it and be part of the community. Thanks again.
Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork
Gene, that tip is somewhere here in this topic (guess i just have too much time in the forum, not so in MATE unfortunately, too many systems too many DE's and not enough time )
bdantas, you're welcome
bdantas, you're welcome
Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork
Thanks for the tip, it really makes the difference. The only small issue I have noticed is that trying to restart marco after killing it like this has a good chance of completely crashing my desktop.zerozero wrote:mate runs great and i have no special issues with it (compiz is still a bit heavy on cpu usage but a killall -9 marco solves the problem - i hope stefano will address this in time);
Now, if only I could somehow make Compiz use my window borders.
Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork
Yes, I know the feeling. 4 OS's on this computer with several desktops on each. It IS getting to be a bit too much. Going to trim things down this week.zerozero wrote:Gene, that tip is somewhere here in this topic (guess i just have too much time in the forum, not so in MATE unfortunately, too many systems too many DE's and not enough time )

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork
first of all thanks to perberos to keep the gnome-like desktop environment alive.
A few days ago I installed Linux Mint and found some little bugs ( I know Mate is still beta, but I couldn't found a corresponding error-report yet).
I installed a GTK2 style - is works perfect with most applications, even with the "appearance preferences" dialogue-window and the rightclick-menu on the desktop.
But the former EOG and system-monitor window appear in another color (the rightclick-menu as well). And last the nautilus.rc does not change the locationbar-icons.
Besides adding a monitor/sensor-applet and the dockbarX-applet to the panel would be great.
Hope that feedback is useful.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork
dockbarx is possible by using the migrate script.
i allready made a post about it in this topic:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 18#p530918
sensor applets are there if u using the latest mate packages(which are not yet in mint):
http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/download
as of nautilus. Mate doesnt have nautilus. it has caja (fork of nautilus)
picture of available applets in mate 1.2 (dockbarx and panflute are migrated and compiled as extra)
