Cinnamon crashed after installing the new kernel.

Post by michaud »

I am using Mint 18.3 and after installing the 4.15.0-32 kernel I started getting errors that cinnamon had crashed. The first time this happened i was able to boot to a different kernel and delete the 4.15.0-32 and this made things normal again. I also upgraded the Nvidia drivers without any change of status on the dm.

I tried the kernel update again and this time none of my other kernels would get past the cinnamon crash that occurs immediately after the logon. This time I added the ppa for cinnamon and upgraded cinnamon. This two failed immediately. i then install xfce and that gives a desktop without any issues.

Can anyone assist. I still cannot use cinnamon while on the 4.15.0-30 kernel. I complete removed the 4.15.0-32 kernel without any change in status.

believe it or not this may possibly be a problem with conflict between nvidia drivers and the kernel...since i do not use nvidia, i will leave this for another person to assist that knows the ins and outs of this...DAMIEN

How did you install the kernel? How did you install the nVidia driver? What version of the driver did you install? Please post the output of this terminal command:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Enclose the results between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

The 4.15.0-32 kernel and the nVidia driver both work fine on my machine so you've probably done something different.

The same configuration works fine for me, and there aren't many reports of it not working so that cannot be correct.

hi CW...i think that would depend on just how old his nvidia card hardware is in relationship to just what driver update is applied...would not the age of the nvidia unit make some difference ?...DAMIEN

To a point, yes, old cards are removed from driver support by nVidia but it doesn't make the situation a conflict between the kernel and the driver. I've asked for specific information to find out what is needed.

in your whisker menu, i believe you will find either "drivers" or possibly called "additional drivers" there...find it and run it...if you dont find it there, go to update manager, then "edit" tab in the top left, then click "software sources" then click onto tab that says additional drivers...report back what choices it gives you...DAMIEN

ok...glad you found the driver updater...your inxi-Fxz shows me you are running a system that is a little older than i expected and took note that your bios may be outdated as regards running more modern software/firmware... Mobo: Dell model: 0K4H3G v: FAB1 Bios: Dell v: A11 date: 06/01/2011 ...which makes me wonder once more if your nvidia is too old to run the "390" with the 4.15 kernel on LM18.3 xfce... Card-2: NVIDIA GF106M [GeForce GT 550M] bus-ID: 01:00.0
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) ...i would hold on for a reply from "catweazel" when the sun is up where he is in australia since he is really good as regards nvidia as he uses nvidia cards and i dont...so hang in there either CW or someone is going to come along with the right answer for your situation...DAMIEN

I decided to downgrade the Nvidia drivers to Nvidia-304.137 Legacy and I still get the Cinnamon crashed error.

I then decided to try MATE and did a install of mint-meta-mate and that too fails. it gets a little further than cinnamon, but, then starts popping the dialog boxes that clear and seem to cycle. It does not fully load the desktop.

hi michaud...im wondering if you might not be better off using peppermint 9 instead...ive seen that you have already tried another different version of mint in as many days, so anything we would try to do to help your initial problem has now changed and is out the window...P9is a more stripped down version that tends to work really great with older machines like yours and when i install on certain old machines where mint doesnt work, i tend to throw P9 on instead just to get the person up and running and it usually works OK on these older machines...let us know how you make out...DAMIEN

Could we get some feedback from your guy in Australia? It looks like Peppermint uses xfce and, so far, I am not pleased with xfce. Unless we have reached an impasse.

I find it strange that the two listings of your graphics info indicates that you are using the intel driver. To me that sounds like you are using the integrated graphics controller instead of the NVIDIA card. I wonder if that is because it failed with the nouveau driver. Someone more knowledgeable than me can tell you if that is the case.

In any case I wouldn't try the 304 driver because I heard that NVidia has dropped support for it and 340 is the oldest one they support now.

Here's my personal experience. I have an old HP Pavilion with integrated NVIDIA graphics. It would always freeze up with nouveau so I had to use the 304 driver which is marked "Recommended". This no longer works with the 4.15 kernel series. So I installed a card I have laying around (NVIDIA GT218 [GeForce 8400GS Rev.3]). This takes the 340 driver so I install it via the driver manager. The end result is I have a Cinnamon 18.3 system running the 4.15.0-32 kernel with the Driver Manager saying I have nvidia-340.104 installed and inxi -G saying I am still using the nouveau driver. Well at least it hasn't frozen up on me yet.

I have now installed Cinammon 19 on another partition on this computer and it is using the 340 driver with no problem. It is also using the 4.15.0-32 kernel. The NVIDIA-340 driver is version 106, though, so I'm wondering if the driver on 18.3 is too old for the 4.15 kernels. That's as much as I've made out so far.

I shifted to the Nvidia-340 drivers and am getting the cinnamon crashed error.

The laptop is a Dell XPS l702x and I do not think it is that old. I think it is under a decade old. Definitely not ancient.

I have been trying to dig into the logs a little bit and it is al very cryptic. Pretty much the first thing I see is the following.

Could it be some type of permissions error? I made a mistake trying to add my user to the wireshark account and it ended up clearing all of the other group assignments for the user. I tried reconstructing this by adding the user to some of the more obvious groups.
