Lock screen UI freezes in Cinnamon 19.1

Hi,

I'm on a fresh install of Linux Mint 19.1, Cinnamon edition. When I lock my screen and leave my computer untouched and locked for a longer period of time (e.g. an hour or two), then the lock screen will freeze. In this state, I can still move the mouse, but I can't perform any actions, all buttons and inputs become completely unresponsive and I can't log back into my session. The only way to get out of this seems to be CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to kill the session; then I can log into a new session. However, this is very inconvenient, as any unsaved changes to files in the old session are lost.

Does this problem occur for anybody else as well? Any idea how to fix this, or at least how to resolve the situation when it occurs without forcefully killing the session?

We need a bit more info.

Firstly the output of inxi -Fxxxz run in a terminal. Copy the output and paste into your reply in between [code][/code] tags.

Second a little more clarification of the scenario when the freeze occurs. E.g. is the machine going into suspend in the interim period, or just screen off but awake, or has the screen been on throughout the intervening period with the screensaver running.

The system freezes when I close the laptop lid and it goes into sleep mode, after awakening on the screen is only a clock and there is no field for entering the password. Time on the clock does not change.

This type of issue is normally hardware ( and specifically graphic driver specific) and are hard to troubleshoot.

Does the problem happen on the latest 4.15 kernel?

Problem in any kernel up to 5. This happened after upgrade from 19.0 to 19.1. On 19.0 with same kernel all working correctly.

Mmm - I've experienced this once now going back to my user who had remained logged in while another user used the machine for most of the day and then the machine had suspended overnight with both users logged in. I could logout of the other users account but when i logged into mine I was presented with the frozen screensaver - Ctrl-Alt-Esc (after a 30 second or so delay) brought it back to life.

The problem just occurred on my PC again. I used the key combo CTRL+ALT+ESC, as suggested by @smurphos, and it brought my session back to life. I was presented with a popup window, saying "Cinnamon just crashed", and offered me to restart Cinnamon. I clicked the button, and everything seems to be working again, even my open windows are still here.

Are there any logfiles or similar which I can provide to assist the devs in sorting out this issue?

I had a quick check through ~/.xsession-errors after the freeze I experienced - nothing there. I didn't get a Cinnamon crash but you could look in Systems Reports for a crash report.

I think I have same/similar issue, posted in this thread viewtopic.php?f=208&t=291874 (there's a video in case that helps).

Our hardware looks similar too with the same Lenovo driver: i915 for Graphics.

We regularly switch users and leave to PC to suspend to the lock screen as well as closing the lid. No obvious pattern to what triggers the issue. When the problem hits it only affects one user's session.

Does this look like the same issue?

No, my issue is different - the screen freezes completely and I can't do anything except moving the mouse cursor around.

I have this exact same issue on Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon. Every day when I get to the work and turn on my monitor, I have to type my password and then press CTRL+ALT+ESC to get to my session. It has been like since I upgraded to Mint 18 from 17. I was hopping that this was solved on 19...

Sorry to say this, I know the developers are working hard and doing their best. But the screen saver seems like complete garbage, not only does it crash and require logging into terminal and killing it frequently. It also consumes high amount of CPU when computer should not be doing really anything ...

I recently upgraded to 19.2 Tina and the problem seems to occur even more frequently there. It's really annoying, especially since the system is working great other than that.

Bump. My lock screen has been freezing on wake from suspend since upgrading to 19.2. I can still unlock by entering the password but no feedback at all from the screen, so if I typo the password I'm stuck. It looks like the screen is updating maybe once every 3-4 seconds, irregularly.
More an annoyance than anything else, but it's a very visible defect in an otherwise splendid release.
