Cinnamon is getting increasingly slow to start

Post by Blue » Tue Dec 03, 2019 4:38 am

Hi everyone,

I've got a problem that's really annoying me with Cinnamon. :(

When I installed Linux Mint, Cinnamon took ~10 seconds to start, from the moment I hit enter on the login screen to the moment the desktop appears on screen. About a week ago I measured again because I felt there was some latency, and the desktop took 20 seconds to start. Yesterday I measured again and it took up to 25 seconds. :?

The system startup isn't affected by this problem, nor my simple openbox install.

I tried creating a new user and the desktop took 15 seconds to load there (no customizations).
However, I tried resetting the settings to default and disabling startup applications on my side, with no luck.

I hope someone can help me find out what's wrong with the desktop, I really like it apart from this problem. :?:
Is there some files or configurations I could delete to fix the problem ? If then, which ?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Blue'

What applets/desklets/extensions did you install in your Cinnamon (if any)?

Just after logging can you open a terminal, run the command cat ~/.xsession-errors and report the output back in your reply in between

tags.
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.

The complete name of my applets in the debugger are "CinnVIIStarkMenu@NikoKrause" and "cinnamon-timer@jake".
I'd like to insist on the fact that resetting the cinnamon settings to default (thus disabling these ?) changed nothing.

Note: I noticed it says "Cinnamon took 7558 ms to start", but the actual latency was way longer. I'd like to highlight that part:

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Launch Driver Manager and install the closed non-free Nvidia driver it recommends to you. Then reboot and test.

That's the onscreen keyboard. If you've go no use for it disable it via the Accessibility settings module.

So the problem appears to be prior to Cinnamon actually starting loading. Try Pjotr's suggestion - if that doesn't improve the situation you'll need to analyse the output of journalctl -b | less to see if you can work out what is happening between log in and cinnamon starting up.

Look for the entry systemd[1]: Stopping Session c1 of user lightdm and then systemd[xxxx]: Started Virtual filesystem metadata service. The first roughly corresponds to hitting enter at the password prompt on the login screen, the 2nd is instigated by Cinnamon so is an indicator in journalctl that Cinnamon has started.

What's happening between these two entries and what's the difference in the time stamps. Any big time gaps?

For reference on my system.

Code: Select all

Dec 04 04:03:33 steve-Inspiron-5580 systemd[1]: Stopping Session c1 of user lightdm.
.....
Dec 04 04:03:35 steve-Inspiron-5580 systemd[1519]: Starting Virtual filesystem metadata service...
xsession-errors notes cinnamon started at 4:03:35

It's done in about 5 seconds (one extension and a few extra applets installed)

I'll try that asap, however I don't get how openbox could be unaffected if this was a system-wide problem ? :?
Edit: installed the driver with no effect.

I didn't find any huge time gaps here although the total is 20 seconds... I don't have much knowledge of the rest.

So no great insight except comparing to my output there are a few services loading there which seem to take several seconds which happen earlier in the boot process for me - before the login screen has fired up.

e.g.

Code: Select all

Dec 04 09:41:01 thibaut-XPS-8700 systemd[1]: Started Network Manager Script Dispatcher Service.
Dec 04 09:41:04 thibaut-XPS-8700 systemd[1455]: Started D-Bus User Message Bus

So basically you're saying there's no problem for me, but how to explain Cinnamon takes twice the time to start ?
The only major thing I installed on this system is VirtualBox !

Also the boot time should have decreased if the services were just launching later...

Nope, I'm saying I don't know what the problem is. The same bit of loading on my system (major difference from your is its an SSD) takes about 2 seconds. It might simply be that - on your system that background services are still loading and slowing things down due to the slower HDD post login screen.
