Badges on panel icons for e.g. unread emails or notifications?

Post by Cantello »

Hi all!

I recently switched from Pop!_OS to Mint (could not get used to Gnome Desktop) and one thing I am sorely missing are icon badges for unread items. No matter what I tried so far is working. Regardless of theme, app (I tried amongst others mailspring, wavebox, gmail via webapp-manager, discord, etc.) or settings I used - nothing was working.

Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong? Currently using Mint 20.1 with Cinnamon 4.8.6 (https://termbin.com/qt8s)

In case it is not clear what I am referring to, this is what I meant (red number on the top left icon): Image

I don't think Cinnamon has this feature, not much you can do. You can make a feature request: https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon/issues

Thanks for the confirmation! I never thought that Cinnamon would not have this feature. Well, off to some other DE. Shame, though, I liked the Mint&Cinnamon combination very much.

What would be the 'official' term for this as I don't want to duplicate feature requests? Searching for "badge" did not yield any suitable results and "indicator" is similar but generally refers to icons in the tray area.

I have opened a feature request for badges, not much hope, though, seeing that literally no one ever asked about this before (or my search-fu is weak).

I think they may be called 'emblems'. But that is a guess.

I think emblems are more decoration for folder icons (as shown in the screenshot below). The badges (or whatever they are officially called) are notification overlays on app icons in the panel to show e.g. unread messages or other things requiring attention but in a more persistent manner than regular notifications.

This whole thing does not appear to be clearly defined, the first appearance (AFAIK) was with Ubuntu's unity DE and the mechanism seems to be different across all desktop environments.
