Cinnamon and nemo-desktop with high CPU load

Post by m-s-a »

Hello,

I am running LinuxMint 20.2 with all updates applied.

Once in about every week or two, my computer heats up (fan starts running on high), and checking the System Monitor shows high CPU load for Cinnamon, coupled with a really high RAM and medium high CPU load for nemo-desktop.

It just happened again, and the problem kept on going past a reboot.

top shows this:

...
Note that CPU usage for gvfsd-metadata is also high. This is the first time that I also checked top, so I am not sure if that was the same before as well.

What could be the reason, and how can I fix it?

I found an old post (https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... -long-time) suggesting to kill gvfsd-metadata and delete its data, but I don't know what the consequences of that would be, so I haven't tried that yet:

Code: Select all

 pkill gvfsd-metadata
 rm -rf .local/share/gvfs-metadata
Thanks,
Mark

It started again - same 3 processes; mostly using up CPU, but not much memory (nemo-desktop 400MB, cinnamon 250MB, gvfsd-metadata <2MB)

Huh? You have an Intel i-7 with 8 fast cores and Nemo is using it up? What the hell?
Uninstall Nautilus if you have it installed.

I think this might have something to do with swap, but I might be wrong about that.
Read these if you want to:
viewtopic.php?f=90&t=315474
viewtopic.php?f=47&t=275768

Lets see the output of these commands:

Code: Select all

dmesg -T | grep -i -E "error|fail|critical|invalid|warning"
dmesg | egrep -i "gvfsd|cinnamon"
Select Menu and type 'Logs'. Any Important logs or System logs? Hit the save icon to save to file.

We need Jo-con-Ël to come back here so I have quoted him.

The second command (dmesg | egrep -i "gvfsd|cinnamon") returns nothing at all.

Even unfiltered (just dmesg by itself), there is absolutely nothing after Sep 10.

Nautilus is NOT installed.

Checked out the two links and looked into "sudo journalctl -b -1" - that one did not show anything since the last boot.

I did check "System" and "Important" in "Logs", and there are tons of entries in both. I tried to export them, but the resulting text files fell like they have much less info. Here they are anyway:

Re: Cinnamon and nemo-desktop with high CPU load

Post by Petermint »

What add-ons are installed in Nemo? Which options on?

I know Nemo has a problem with thumbnails and the multimedia extension. If you use either and delete/switch off, the problem might go away. In my case the worst result was visiting a directory with a thousand large image files. The thumbnail grind killed a 4 GB machine with a good 4 core processor and fast SSD.

I haven't (knowingly) made any changes to Nemo; I just use it as file explorer the way it came with Mint...
Extensions that are listed in the Plugin Manager are:
  • Folder color switcher
  • Nemo Emblems
  • Nemo Fileroller
  • Nemo Share
I'm attaching some screenshots from the Preferences. Let me know if you need anything specific.

I have Preview show thumbnails No. There are several threads on Nemo thumbnail problems when you have many files.

nemo-media-columns is an extension that can slow things down. I used it then deleted it. Pix is better for browsing media with detailed info displays.

Thank you, Petermint,

I did disable Thumbnail Preview completely, waited a bit, but CPU usage stayed at close to 200%. Then I killed nemo-desktop, and it came backup behaving nicely (so far - usually it comes back and just goes right back up beyond 150% CPU); so that might have been it.
I'll post an update in a little bit...

I don't see nemo-media-columns in my setup though, do you?

Thanks,
Mark

The break did not last long - nemo-desktop is back at over 150% CPU and now using up a ton of memory as well
System Monitor is showing 2.6GB "virtual memory", 1.6GB "resident memory", 1.6GB "Memory"

I removed all Cinnamon applets and the issued stopped again and has not come back since.
I am starting to add back a few applets at a time to see if I can find out if one of them is causing it...

I removed all Cinnamon applets
That is a good thing. I have 13 applets installed and they don't seem to cause me problems, but I am always leery of them. Please do tell us if you find a guilty one.
