Help My Screen is Pixeling
I have a problem with Linux mint 20, Cinnamon. I launched VirtualBox, and I was running a virtual machine, then, a problem happened, the computer got stuck, so I pressed the power off button on my laptop to reboot the computer while the virtual machine was still running but stuck. and after restarting, the computer started to show weird pixels. for example, when I scroll fast, when I write fast, when I close a window or do an emotion that is fast, it shows these pixels:
I have also noticed that all the emotions got disabled, for instance, when I press Alt + F1 to see all the workspaces, it shows them quickly without the beautiful animation, all the animations got disabled.
I have checked the Effects utility, I saw that the animations are enabled:
I have recorded a video describing the issue CLICK HERE TO WATCH (YouTube)

The worst, what you could do. With this habit you are going to destroy the file system with all possible consequences. We need to check and possibly repair this at first.
Open a terminal and enter
Code: Select all
sudo touch /forcefsck
Re: Help My Screen is Pixeling
Hi Cosmo, thanks for your reply, I applied the command. and rebooted, I didn't notice a difference while rebooting. now after the reboot. the problem hasn't been solvedCosmo. wrote: ⤴Wed Jun 29, 2022 7:32 amThe worst, what you could do. Open a terminal and enterthen reboot. The filesystem gets checked and hopefully repaired, because of this the boot time might be noticeable longer. Possibly there will be some data loss.Code: Select all
sudo touch /forcefsck

Open the login screen settings and activate the guest account. Reboot and log in as guest. The same problem there?
One other thing: Please no full quote, this is usually not necessary and makes more scrolling necessary and gives less clarity. There is a Reply button below the last post.

Re: Help My Screen is Pixeling
Wow, I enabled the guest login, and the problem wasn't there, the guest account was more beautiful than mine (1-year-old).
Then obviously the problem is in my account.
wait, now what?

Re: Help My Screen is Pixeling
Yes, the problem is in your account, most likely in the Firefox profile.
Now back in your main account: Open FF, click the Hamburger menu -> help -> troubleshooting mode. How does it look now?

Re: Help My Screen is Pixeling
Your computer has a 10th-gen Intel CPU. The drivers in the 5.4 kernel are really too old to properly support that hardware. Please upgrade to a newer kernel in Update Manager.samina wrote: ⤴Fri Jul 22, 2022 12:11 amCPU:

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.13 or 5.15 kernels:
- Open Update Manager.
- Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
- Make sure 5.13 or 5.15 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
- Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
(By the way: FF does mean Firefox.)

Re: Help My Screen is Pixeling
Sorry from my side regarding Firefox (FF). I mixed something.
On the other side: I do not believe in upgrading the kernel. Your success in the guest account tells a different story.
Very hard to say, where the culprit might be. From experience there are 3 hidden folders in your home, which I suspect to be responsible, that are:
1. .cache
2. .config
3. .local
#1 has the least probability for success, but it is the easiest to check.
Open the file manager and make hidden files visible (ctrl-h).
Rename the folder .cache in your home to .cache.renamed. Immediately afterwards log out and back into your account. Any change?
It doesn't hurt, if you upgrade the kernel anyway, but do both actions one by one, otherwise nobody can tell afterwards, what in case made the difference.

Re: Help My Screen is Pixeling
I deleted the ./.cache folder and quickly logged out before the system created a newer one. and logged in again but no it did not work.
and tried the same but by changing the name of the .config folder and did not work.
.local I'll try, just shortly...

Re: Help My Screen is Pixeling
Is this the laptop you mentioned in this post which went flying to the ground?
A woman typing on a laptop with LM20.3 Cinnamon.
Re: Help My Screen is Pixeling
yes, but believe me it's 100% something related to the software, not the hardware, and I'm 100% sure it's not related to the lower level stuff of the operating system like the kernel. Because the problem of screen pixels did not happen alone, other issues showed up. The problem is preventing the motions, I mean the animations, the cool animations, I'm not sure which word describes what I mean.
for example, I used to press ALT + F1 and the workspaces show up with a beautiful slow sliding animation. Now, it still works, but the animations got disabled, it quickly shows the workspaces but without any animation.
also when I enabled the guest mode (login as guest), all the animations worked just fine as normal. The issue is only in my account, (I have only this user account on my laptop)

Still waiting for the result with the renamed folder .local.
Re: Help My Screen is Pixeling
Yes, today I tried it,
.local
.cache
.config
changing their names and logging out did not solve it

Crazy. There is not much place for other ideas.
I do not want you to poke around in your account. So we need to go a detour.
Create a new user account. Log out of the current account and go into the new account. Now from the new account (this is crucial) copy your complete home with the exception of the folders without a leading dot in the name and the folders .mozilla and .thunderbird fom the main account to the new test account. If asked let all objects overwrite the existing ones. If completed log out and back into the test account. In theory you should have now the same problem in test. Please report back, if the test account follows the theory .

anyway.
I was thinking. if it's easy, I create a new account, and I move my documents and files to that account, and after that, I make that account the admin (the root). and then I delete the old account.
Instead of having to install the Linux mint from the beginning.
the question now is, how

Re: Help My Screen is Pixeling
Open Users & Groups and create a new account. Make sure, that this is a administrator-type.
Now you can log into the new account and use it.
To copy your data from the old to the new account, note:
Do this only from the new account. That means, you pull the files, not pushing.
Do not use elevated rights for that. You will fall into endless trouble later on.
Note further: You can only copy, not move the files.
Copy the content of hidden files and folders very rarely to avoid, that you copy the problem into the new account. Exceptions exist, especially the folder .mozilla (for Firefox) and .thunderbird (for Thunderbird, if you use it).
