Mint 21 Cinnamon random freezes

Post by zigo33 »

Hi all,

I've had Mint 20 for a long time with no problems, no hiccups, running smoothly. Then I upgraded to 21 by first upgrading to 20.3 and then to 21.
Went ok. My PC is connected to 2 monitors, 64 GB of RAM, Ryzen 7, GTX 1650 (see below).

I first noticed that when the screen was locked, one monitor was not showing the locked screen but the whole screen before being locked. And completely freezed now and then.

I upgraded the the latest NVidia drivers (515), I thought it was ok but I still have some intermittent freezes, and when it freezes, nothing works, I have to push the reset button of my PC.

It's very frustrating, specially because Mint 20 was perfect.

Welcome to the forum, zigo33.

The issue with the lockscreen sounds like it may be a known bug. You can see more information in this topic Lock screen security issue (imo). The bugs are mentioned in this post.

And completely freezed now and then.
Is this issue separate from the lock-screen issue?

Is there anything happening on your computer when the freeze happens? Are you working in a specific app? Or are you not at the computer at all?

If this is the correct page B550M DS3H (rev. 1.x) : BIOS, it appears you are still running on the original BIOS version. The most recent is F15.

Is there a particular reason you do not have any swap set up? I realize your system has a lot of RAM, but I do not know your normal system load.

You're right, the BIOS was outdated. Just updated now, but I don't think this was coming from the BIOS.

The problem didn't come back though, since my post. Weird...
