Cinnamon Freezing when left idle

Post by Huecuva »

Since the upgrade to Mint 21, I've been having numerous issues with Cinnamon. My previous issue was with the Grouped Window List. This issue is still not resolved. Pretty sure it's a bug, though.

My current issue is with Cinnamon freezing when my machine is left idle. It doesn't happen every time, but so far I have returned to my machine once when returning home from work and just now after getting up in the morning to find cinnamon completely frozen, the lock screen not engaged and the DE not responding to anything. I can still move my mouse cursor around.

The last time this happened (when I returned home from work to find the machine unresponsive) I used my phone to SSH into the machine and reboot it. This time I looked up how to simply restart the DE on my phone and used CTRL-ALT-BKSPCE to restart Xorg. For an obnoxiously long time I was left with a blank black screen around which I could move my mouse cursor, but while I was looking up further solutions on my phone the DE finally appeared and I could use my HTPC as normal.

Here is my ~/.xsession-errors.old if that helps anyone figure out what's going on. Please let me know if there is any other information required.

On a side (and somewhat related) note, ctrl-alt-F* doesn't seem to actually open a TTY in Linux Mint for some reason. It just turns the screen black and my monitor goes to sleep. Unless it's opening on my secondary monitor (room mate's TV) for some reason, which it shouldn't be doing.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- Make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxpmrz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter, and don't omit the space after inxi!)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Regarding the virtual console: Unplug the secondary monitor to find out, if the signal goes to there.
Gotcha!

Is my GT430 really so old that it can't even handle Cinnamon? It doesn't seem to have any issue at all with the DE while I'm using it. It just freezes sometimes if it's left idle for a while, and when that happens the screen doesn't lock.

I'm not sure if they're seperate issues or if Cinnamon freezes before the screen can lock and prevents it from locking, but the latter would mean it doesn't sit idle for very long at all before it freezes. I haven't actually noticed if the lock screen is failing even when it doesn't freeze. I will keep an eye on that.

I don't have stuttering or screen tearing or anything like that, so I'm not sure how these tricks to reduce the load on my GPU would help at all.

It's a guess, but still an educated one. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Okay, I have done everything outlined in that walkthrough. I've disabled all of those things except compositing. I will see if Cinnamon freezes again over the next few days.

As a side note, I have noticed that the screen does not lock even when Cinnamon does not freeze. I have set the screen to lock 15 seconds after the screensaver triggers instead of immediately and I will see if that makes a difference.

EDIT: After testing with a 1 minutes screensaver timer, the 15 second delay seems to make a difference.

Alright, I'm not sure if it's a related issue, but I just got home today to find my HTPC locked as it should be, however the login dialog was on my secondary monitory and so I couldn't see it. It usually moves to whichever monitor has mouse focus but it did not switch when I moved my mouse around and clicked on my primary monitor. I was able to log in, though.

So I just got home from work today to find that my screen had not locked as it should have. Cinnamon has still not frozen since I disabled all of those graphical features, however.
