Strange behavior since cinnamon 1.6 update

I've been experiencing peculiar bugs since this afternoon, after my first reboot since upgrading cinnamon. I did the upgrade yesterday and it ran fine (after a cinnamon restart) until I rebooted though, so I'm not sure if cinnamon 1.6 is responsible for those problems. Here are the symptoms:
  • When I first boot (autologon is enabled), the panel is unresponsive to the mouse;
  • I can open the menu using [super] but it's unusable because I can't click it and the keyboard doesn't focus on it;
  • I can run apps using [Alt][F2] but right-clicking doesn't work anywhere; however, popup menus can be summoned using the keyboard menu button (to the right of the spacebar);
  • If I reset the X server using [Ctrl][Alt][Backspace], panel and mouse behaviors are back to normal
  • Even after resetting the X server, I've experience a couple of freezes (in the last hours) where everything is frozen but the mouse cursor, which I can move around (but clicking anywhere doesn't achieve anything). Fortunately, I can reset X server using [Ctrl][Alt][Backspace]
Maybe there are people out there experiencing the same behaviors, or who could identify which part of the system might be responsible for this?
I will try downgrading cinnamon and report back.

Edit:
  • I tried downgrading the cinnamon package, I guess there are other modifications I should have done because the window manager wouldn't load. Back to version 1.6 now.
  • By disabling automatic login, I get a fonctionnal panel on first logon, even if the timed login takes over. So setting a timed login of 1 second seems like a satisfying workaround for now.
  • I did encounter another freeze this morning. I was playing music and the music player kept on playing, I could move the cursor around but otherwise user interface was unresponsive. Hopefully future versions will have this solved.

Your description fits, at least in part, with this reported and now closed issue: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/705.

I only suffer from the occasional freezes since I upgraded to Cinnamon 1.6 but, in my case, they seem to be related to any disk/media activity: every time I insert a USB key, a CD or access unmounted partitions the desktop freezes for about 5 seconds, sometimes more, CPU usage goes up to 100% and the computer is unusable.

Perhaps we should reopen the issue. BTW, in Gnome 2.32 there was a tool to browse system logs, is there an equivalent in Cinnamon / Gnome 3?

Maybe gnome-system-log is what you are talking about? It is part of the initial installation on Maya. Found in System Tools under the name Log File Viewer

Thanks a lot. It doesn't help that System / Config / Preferences utilities are spread in several different places ...
