I tried this too, but found the file was back to the original at the next boot.
As I said in previous posts above, I have had success with changing everything back to the defaults - mdm login screen, wallpaper
(I don't think I mentioned the wallpaper before

), icons, themes.
Also changing a couple of files - I have no idea if
these changes made any difference or not.
It seems changing back to the out-of-the-box appearance has done it for me.
For many reboots now, the desktop icons have appeared as they should. But when I tried to change the wallpaper again ... they disappeared again.
So I changed it back
