Who is using them and what's your take on them.

Would like to hear about your experiences with nightlies.

IMO they are just more bleeding edge, I didn't have any issues with them. But some extensions crashed Cinnamon, so I needed to add the new version numbers into metadata.json.

I've been using the Cinnamon nightlies for months without any issues. And I'm working on themes, which requires constant reloading and tweaking, so putting it through some riggers, and it remains very stable. I've had a few system freezes, since getting my laptop months ago (immediately wiped Win7 and installed Mint 14), but I assume it's related to the known integrated intel graphics on the CPU issue, which I believe was fixed in Mint 14.01.

I used the nightly builds ppa to get the latest Nemo -- some good work has been done and I wanted to take advantage of it. Otherwise I keep the ppa deactivated.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwibber-daily/ppa

You are about to add the following PPA to your system:

Re: Cinnamon nightly builds

Post by Orbmiser »

zerozero pm'ed me with using correct one which is.

cinnamon's ppa is

Code: Select all

    ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly
So deleted old one beginning of thread and added that.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
and then what's next to get cinnamon nemo nightlies to update?
.

Re: Cinnamon nightly builds

you can open mintupdate and let it update all the relevant stuff.

Re: Cinnamon nightly builds

Post by Orbmiser »

Hmmm just now confused as sources show

Code: Select all

http://ppa.launchpad.net/gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly/ubuntu
http://ppa.launchpad.net/gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly/ubuntu
are checked marked but when I do a refresh not seeing anything for cinnamon or nemo upgrades.
Should i bee seeing 1.8? or how to tell am indeed running nightlies on desktop.

Re: Cinnamon nightly builds

Post by zerozero »

you're using mint14, right? so the repos should be

Code: Select all

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly/ubuntu quantal main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly/ubuntu quantal main
then you can update and upgrade

Re: Cinnamon nightly builds

Re: Cinnamon nightly builds

Post by zerozero »

ok i found the issue (sorry for taking so long)
1- the ppa is correct (no need to edit)
2- the question is pin-priority, cinnamon and nemo are also in mint's repo and those have higher priority than the ppa's
3- to overcome this we have to

Code: Select all

gksu gedit /etc/apt/preferences
in the file that opens add the following rule

Code: Select all

Package: *
Pin: origin ppa.launchpad.net
Pin-Priority: 700
save the file; update and upgrade.

this should do it

Re: Cinnamon nightly builds

Post by Orbmiser »

Thanks for all your help. Reboot and synaptic had updates for cinnamon, muffin, nemo tho version still shows 1.1.2 tho now pane icons look cleaner and somekind of blue underline under /home /root and my usb external drives (Disk Space used?).

Just assume it's nightlies or some way to check versions?
But thanks for your help as didn't want to wait till april and may to get the goodies improvements for 1.8.

Re: Cinnamon nightly builds [Solved]

Post by zerozero »

you should have something very similar to this

Code: Select all

zerozero@zerozero-at-nadia:~$ apt-cache policy cinnamon nemo
cinnamon:
  Installed: 1.6.7-20130110050015-raring
  Candidate: 1.6.7-20130110050015-raring
  Version table:
 *** 1.6.7-20130110050015-raring 0
        500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly/ubuntu/ raring/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     1.6.7-1 0
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ raring/universe i386 Packages
nemo:
  Installed: 1.1.2-20130110032006-raring
  Candidate: 1.1.2-20130110032006-raring
  Version table:
 *** 1.1.2-20130110032006-raring 0
        500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly/ubuntu/ raring/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
see the versioning number: first part is the same (1.6.7 for cinnamon and 1.1.2 for nemo) but then you have the build date 2013.01.10.050015

Re: Cinnamon nightly builds [Solved]

Again thanks for the info and crossing fingers not too many stepping into potholes and breaking things.

Tho yours shows raring and mine quantal

orbmiser@Winterfell ~ $ apt-cache policy cinnamon nemo
cinnamon:
Installed: 1.6.7-20130110045012-quantal
Candidate: 1.6.7-20130110045012-quantal
Version table:
*** 1.6.7-20130110045012-quantal 0
700 http://ppa.launchpad.net/gwendal-lebiha ... ly/ubuntu/ quantal/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
1.6.7+nadia 0
700 http://packages.linuxmint.com/ nadia/main amd64 Packages
nemo:
Installed: 1.1.2-20130110031008-quantal
Candidate: 1.1.2-20130110031008-quantal
Version table:
*** 1.1.2-20130110031008-quantal 0
700 http://ppa.launchpad.net/gwendal-lebiha ... ly/ubuntu/ quantal/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
1.1.2+nadia 0
700 http://packages.linuxmint.com/ nadia/main amd64 Packages

Tho seems update broke compact menu applet and had to resort to cinnamon menu.

Re: Cinnamon nightly builds [Solved]

Post by zerozero »

yep,
i'm running in this install raring

Code: Select all

zerozero@zerozero-at-nadia:~$ inxi -S
System: Host: zerozero-at-nadia Kernel: 3.8.0-0-generic i686 (32 bit) Desktop: Gnome Distro: Ubuntu 13.04 raring
the hostname is a misnomer
this week (with desklets and some other commits) cinnamon has been a bit unstable but this is not the usual self; on the other hand this is a development branch and can break anytime.

Has the Cinnamon nightlies broken some applets for anyone else? It might be just other menu applets. They're all blank now.
