[SOLVED] Add programs to taskbar

Post by Waffeleisen »

Hey,

how can I add programms like Chromium to the left side of my taskbar, next to Menue?
I only know how I can add applets to taskbar (brightness, sound etc.) but I can't find a way to add programs like my browser or file manager.

Right-click the application in your menu (find it in your menu, this won't work from the favorites), you have options there to add the launcher to various places--amongst them your panel.

I have already tried that. But it doesn't work. I'm able to put them onto my desktop, but if I click "add to taskbar" nothing happens.

Try putting one in the desktop and then drag and drop to the taskbar

Just checking; do you have the word "Menu" on your menu button, or is it only a Linux Mint icon? If you don't have the word "Menu" on it, you are having graphic driver problems which will cause you to not run Cinnamon fully.

Drag and drop from Desktop doesn't solve the problem :-( The icon just flies back to desktop and doesn't stick to taskbar (I enabled editing on taskbar)

Yes, the word "Menu" is there, too.

Do you have other launchers on your panel? Else check that you have the Panel launchers applet enabled (Cinnamon Settings > Applets).

And you just solved it for me too. I accidentally disabled the Panel launcher applet today and spent 20 minutes fumbling around wondering what I'd done.

Thank you.

Re: Add programs to taskbar

Hello:

I have a screenshot application called Hotshots.
I have it installed, and it was in the taskbar, but it disappeared.

Now I cannot add it to the taskbar.
When I right click on the taskbar area, a menu pops up, and there is
"+ add applets tot he panel".

But this does not show Hotshots in the Applet's app listing.

I also clicked "Panel Settings, and "Panel Edit" option is not checked.
If I check it, LM does not allow me to click on any existing app in taskbar to launch it.

I was able to inlcude apps in the taskbar before Hotshots disappeared from the taskbar.
What is causing the problem?

Another problem I now have, after I reinstalled Hotshots, I cannot find the folder for HotShots.
I wonder if i can right click on the Hotshots executable file and a menu may pop up to let me add it to taskbar.

Thanks.

Program launchers in the panel are not applets, to add a program launcher to the panel in Cinnamon locate the program in the main menu and then right click on it, that will open a sub menu with the option to add to panel.

Hope this helps

Good morning WinterTroubles:

When I click the menu icon at bottom left, and then in the search box, typed in Hotshots,
it does not appear anywhere in the seacrh listing results.

For example, if I type in Firefox, the listing for Firefox browser shows up, and all I have to do is click it to launchFirefox.

This is not possible with hotshots.
I remove and reinstalled Hotshots multiple times, and still the same problem.

I can confirm that Hotshots app exists since it lanuch from console's command line.

Why is it not appearing in the search's listing?
If can make it show up in the search listing, then i can insert the program into the taskbar like you suggested.
Thank you.

I'll be honest and say I'm not personally familiar with Hotshots, so can't say why it doesn't appear in your main menu, sorry.

We can however manually add it to your menu :)

If you right click on you menu icon in the panel/task-bar and then on 'configure', you will open a new window with options for the main menu in it.

You can then click the wide button near the bottom marked 'open menu editor'. This will open another new window, next you can click the category you would like Hotshots to appear in and then click 'new item' on the top right.

Now you just need fill in the details in the text boxes, name, command (the one you use to launch Hotshots from terminal) and any comment you wish to appear when you hover over the menu item you are creating.

Finally you can choose an icon by clicking the generic icon, this will open a file selection window (usually in the default icon directory /user/share/icons...).

Hope this helps and that I've explained it in a way you can understand.
