Cinnamon problems

Post by mysteron75 »

I have been running cinnamon for a while and when i upgraded to ubuntu 13.04 I start have panel issues. I have uninstalled and re installed several times. I eventually got it back by installing nemo again but i could not install any new applets. I tried installing the gnome menus from the instructions on the site and they never showed and i logged out and back in all i got was a wall paper and no panels. I can pull up the command prompt but it does not have a boarder. After a while the crash alert will come up but cinnamon will never come back and the crash alert comes up. Any help would be much appreciated.

Just a few questions for you:

- What distro are you running now? Mint or Ubuntu?
- What did you installed/re-installed a several times?

If you want my opinion, wipe your whole harddrive (after backing up your personal/important files) and perform a fresh/clean/new install of either Mint or Ubuntu. Looking at your thread it seems you screwed up your system beyond repair.

Okay, now i understand... From my own experience i tried Ubuntu 12.04 with Cinnamon and it did screwed up my system. The best idea i had then was that there's some conspiracy going on like Canonical was/is trying their best to avoid other desktop environments on their distro besides Unity/LXDE/Xfce/KDE

You could read this and try this: http://www.webupd8.org/2012/02/alternat ... buntu.html. although it is a year old topic, the basic still can be used.
And this thread also for Ubuntu 12.04/12.10: http://www.webupd8.org/2012/09/new-cinn ... ssion.html.

It can also be that Ubuntu 13.04 is much too new for Cinnamon.

Here's the official Cinnamon website: http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/

I added the nightly repository and i did an install and i got my panels back but it say cinnamon crashed. I cant right edit or right click panels and the icons did not load. I guess i will just have to wait till a build that works :(

Yeah I has very similar issues when used using the cinnamon from the Ubuntu 13.04 repositories. It would work for a while then crash.

Cinnamon --replace brings the panels back but you can't click on them. It'd then report cinnamon has crashed again.

I can live with unity until mint 15 :)

I'm really dazzled here....You guys want tor un Ubuntu and as desktop environment you want Cinnamon.... Why not installing Mint with Cinnamon as operating system??? Mint is based on Ubuntu, so you still can use the PPA's you were using. And it's much easier and user-friendlier.

Let me give you my reason: Cinanmon is a must, but I already had Ubuntu from before. I don't have time nor will to reinstall now all that to Mint.... So, until the next time...

Reason I haven't switched to mint right now is that i am not feeling a re-install at the moment. I did as complete of an uninstall as i could get and installed cinnamon 1.8 and most everything seems to work now. The only thing that is not working is if i try to add the applets for with the gnome menu or mint menu it asks me for a password to install something relate to schema. It doesn't take any of my passwords.
