Kernel Panic Crash

Post by Brainwaste »

I am running Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon from a 32 GB USB flash drive. I am doing a live boot off of the Kingston Technology, Data Traveler G3 USB 2.0 thumb drive.
I am running Firefox 20.0 for Linux Mint- 1.0.
The trouble is this: In the middle of surfing the Internet the browser locks up/freezes, then crashes & these messages appear:

Kernel Panic- not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
drm_kms_helper: panic occurred, switching back to text console.

Any idea as to what this means, what is causing this & how to fix? Thanks for any help.

You believe that the trouble is related to the specific distro that I am runnung. How so? What do you believe is causing this error/trouble? Be as specific
as possible.

I don't know what is causing the problem, could be Cinnamon, the 3D emulation or something with the kernel that didn't happen with MATE. Cinnamon was slower than MATE anyway so never tried Cinnamon again on that computer and because it as a live system there are no logs to look at...

No system logs?? Oh contraire. The syslog reported the following: "WARNING; at/build/buildd/linux-3.8.0/drivers/iommu/
dmar.c :481 ward_invalid_dmar+0x98/0x98/0xb0 ()
Hardware name: Compaq dc7800
Youir BIOS is broken; dmar reported at address fed90000 returns all ones!
BIOS Vender: Hewlett-Packard; Ver:786F1 v01.04

Any ideas as to what this all means? How do I fix a broken bios?

If it's a BIOS problem you should check if a newer BIOS for that motherboard/computer exists and if so you should upgrade the BIOS. Before that, I would try to upgrade the kernel or change to MATE or other Mint edition because a failed BIOS upgrade could brick your computer.

Why is MATE superior to Cinnamon? Give me some specifics?

MATE is not superior to Cinnamon, they are both good desktops but Cinnamon does have one extra requirement, 3D acceleration (native or emulated).

If your system failure is in some way related to the 3D acceleration, try MATE, it should work like it did to me.

If not, you will have one more error message to help with debugging. If it's the same, the solution could be a BIOS upgrade or downgrade to Mint 13 if that works.

Is there any way for me to test out if the 3D acceleration is what is causing the system failure or not?
