Hello,
I'm trying to install Cinnamon 2.2, but get a cryptic message regarding unmet dependencies, that apparently will not be installed. I checked Synaptic for broken depencies, but none are listed.
Running:
Ubuntu 14.04 (have long used Mint, but could not get it to install on my new ASUS with new secured BIOS, had to go with Ubuntu.)
Mate 1.6.2
performed apt-get update and upgrade, but still no luck
greg@asus:~$ sudo apt-get install cinnamon

Re: Attempting Cinnamon Install -- Unmet Dependencies
that's totally confusing, you say you have unbuntu 14.04 but you are running an older Mate then the one shipped with 14.04Running:
Ubuntu 14.04 (have long used Mint, but could not get it to install on my new ASUS with new secured BIOS, had to go with Ubuntu.)
Mate 1.6.2
Are you running the commands Monsta gave you on the new laptop or on another machine? because it seems you are on Mint Petra?
Re: Attempting Cinnamon Install -- Unmet Dependencies
I'm doing all of this only one laptop
Those versions are what show in my system monitor.
I'm running Ubuntu OS . . . but Mate desktop. Ubuntu doesn't come with Mate
Here's my sources.list. Funny, System Monitor shows 14.04, but my sources.list file shows 13.10 (??)

Re: Attempting Cinnamon Install -- Unmet Dependencies
I used the latest recommendation at the bottom of http://askubuntu.com/questions/94201/ho ... on-desktop
Namely:
Or you can directly use linux mint repository. Just add to your software sources
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ lisa main
and do
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linuxmint-keyring cinnamon cinnamon-session
Added repo to my sources.list, updated and installed, got the same error as before:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
cinnamon : Depends: gir1.2-muffin-3.0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libcogl-pango12 (>= 1.7.4) but it is not installable
Depends: libcogl12 (>= 1.9.6) but it is not installable
Depends: libmuffin0 but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: gnome-themes-standard but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: nemo but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: cinnamon-screensaver but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: gir1.2-cjsdbus-1.0 but it is not installable
Recommends: cinnamon-bluetooth but it is not going to be installed

Whats with the "broken packages" ? Why don't I see those in Synaptic?

Re: Attempting Cinnamon Install -- Unmet Dependencies
I think this is your problem:
Mint Lisa is version 12, and the current version of Mint, equivalent to Ubuntu 14, is Mint 17 Qiana. You're trying to install something that's probably way too old for Ubuntu 14. Instead, you should probably follow the instructions that are specifically for Ubuntu 14:
Or this version, which is for Ubuntu 12 and 14:
Try that and let us know if that goes any better.
Code: Select all
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ lisa main
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lestcape/cinnamon
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tsvetko.tsvetkov/cinnamon
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

Re: Attempting Cinnamon Install -- Unmet Dependencies
why would you install for Lisa based on ubuntu 11.10? no wonder it won't work.
Remove what you have added as repo (mint lisa) and use the link I provided.
