First of all, I am quiet new to Linux and Linux Mint, and even though I really like this OS, I have some problems with the current bottom taskbar, it looks outed and reminds me to Windows 1995
My question, is there a way to change the way the taskbar is displayed (Specifically, from programs or apps which are currently open)?
1.) From icons + text to only icons (similar to Windows 7 or 8 ?
2.) Possibility to display miniature pop-up windows when hovering over icons in taskbar?
I guess that most probably there have been already similar questions in this forum. However, maybe it also could be used as feedback for the newest version.
Really would appreciate any comments !!

Can I customize the main bottom taskbar similar to Win7/8 ?

You might want to try Zorin OS, which is designed to resemble Windows.
It uses Avant Window Navigator to mimic Windows' task bar. This can also be installed in Linux Mint of course.

You might have a look at the available themes for Cinnamon on http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/themes
Since you are looking for Windows-esque themes, those might suit your liking:
http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/themes/view/265 (Windows 7 Aero)
http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/themes/view/108 (Windows 7 Basic)
http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/themes/view/188 (Windows 8)
Since ZorinOS has been mentioned, there's also a theme resembling that: http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/themes/view/314

Re: Can I customize the main bottom taskbar similar to Win7/
Thanks a lot for your suggestions !!!
There are some really nice themes !! However, I am not looking for a Windows imitation, I still like Mint. ..just this taskbar does not convince me !!
And it seems like that those Windows-esque themes regretfully still do not display miniature pop-up windows when hovering over icons in the taskbar.
Finally I will study about Zorin, but I would feel pity to change from Mint to Zorin !!

The taskbar of the Mate desktop and Cinnamon desktop as well of the Xfce desktop and KDE desktop comes as they are. Windows, Linux and even MacOS provides a similar desktop environment to make life a bit easier for each and every user. Let's say you jumped ffrom a Windows system to an Aplle system running MacOS. The only difference between MacOS and Windows 7/8 is the location of the taskbar (MacOS has it located at the top of the screen). But it still looks like Windows... the taskbar is still displayed as any other operating system.darjeeling wrote:Thanks a lot for your suggestions !!!

Zorin does the same, Mint does the same, Fedora does the same, OpenSuse does the same.
Just explain much better what you really want with your taskbar.

I do realize this is a 3 year old thread, but hopefully someone will find it useful. The easiest solution is to simply edit the taskbar. Here is the step by step guide:
