[SOLVED - sortof] Can't change Workspace names in LM17.3 Cinnamon

Post by Ranthe » Sat Jul 23, 2016 6:48 am

Hi,

For some reason I've found that I'm no longer able to change the workspace names on my account in Mint 17.3 Cinnamon - whenever I overtype the name to changes it the updates don't save and the name reverts to the original.
I think it must be something to do with a duff Cinnamon config file on my user account, as I don't have the problem under a new test user in Cinnamon, and have no issues under my account in MATE.

Any suggestions for what config file I should look at to see if it's been accidentally made read-only? I did an eyeball comparison between my 'test' account (where it works fine) and my main account but can't seem to find anything obvious.

Do you speak about 2 systems dualobooted (one with Cinnamon, one with Mate) or is this a system with 2 DEs inside?

A single dual-booted system (Windows Vista + Linux Mint 17.3), Mint has two desktop environments installed - MATE and Cinnamon.
(I've never quite been able to decide whether MATE has enough of a performance edge over Cinnamon on my 8 year old system to make up for the lack of eye candy :-) )

2 DEs on one system can work, they can also produce trouble. It is not recommended.

Try to create a new test account and test there.

The complete test would be, to run the test account with both DEs. Questions, if the problem is by doing so reproducible.
Sorry, I forgot to point this out.

"SOLVED": Can't change Workspace names in LM17.3 Cinnamon

Post by Ranthe » Sat Feb 11, 2017 3:59 pm

Problem "solved" by nuking LM 17.3 and upgrading to 18.1 MATE

I hadn't realised what kind of rubbish my original profile had been accumulating over the last couple of years of fiddling about with desktop environments until installing 18.1 MATE and finding my system coming to a screeching halt on login on my old login (I have a separate /home partition). The solution to this was to reinstall and create a new login - leaving the old one there - then moving all my data files and selected app configs like Thunderbird Mail and so forth to the new profile and applying copious quantities of chown -hR <newusername> <folder> to restore access. (And manually update a few configs which were still pointing to the old profile for data).

All fixed now, 18.1 MATE is running "sweet as" and I won't be doing the multi-desktop again :-)
