Tossing my name in with this issue.
MacBook 6,1 with Core2Duo @ 2.26ghz and 4gb RAM.
Withing minutes of booting into cinnamon, its cpu usage climbs to 100% and beyond, even just sitting idle. Looks like others use the "fix" of switching to MATE, which is what I'm gonna do tonight.

I don't know if this helps, but I've seen a lot of complaints on forums about systemd and it's journald causing CPU overrun. You might want to see if that applies to your system. If you run this, you can see if your system uses systemd and if it's PID is 1, showing it's in command instead of Upstart.
Or could run htop and see

All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....
