How can I type a path/filename in a load dialog?

Using Mint 18 Cinnamon, I can't seem to find a way to type (or cut/paste) a filename into the load file dialog (in this case, for xed, although most everything else shares the same issue). The save dialog has a place for that, but not the load one. All it shows is what it calls the path bar (breadcrumb bar).

Typing in the entry just results in a small box at the bottom of the window popping up and taking the keystrokes for search purposes. Trying to paste a path results in an error message "The folder contents could not be displayed - operation not supported."

In the dconf editor, I find an option to change org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser (capitalization included in original description shown in dconf editor) > location-mode from "path-bar" to "filename-entry". Unfortunately, it has no effect, and as soon as I use a program that should be using this option, it pops back to "path-bar". I even tried locking the file using a technique listed at https://help.gnome.org/admin/system-adm ... wn.html.en , which stopped it from popping it back to path-bar (after I decapitalized the path as shown above... it did not lock it with the caps in as shown), but it still does not obey the setting.

Am I missing something?

Thanks!

If you are in the file open dialog, press ctrl-L, this changes the address bar to the way you want it to have.

Yes, What Cosmo said works in most file open dialog boxes.

Thanks, that works! But why doesn't the actual pref that exists for this purpose... you know, work? Seems like that would be the most logical way.

I can reproduce the issue with the pref setting: It seems, that x-apps don't obey this setting, when the dialog gets opened. Probably a bug. I filed a report.
