Raw thumbnails.
Having given up with xfce and tried Cinnamon I have the same problem with RAW thumbnails,Gnome-Raw-Thumbnailer is installed and no thumbnails.Initially there was an icon in place of the actual picture but after installing the thumbnailer I get a grey box with a black stripe on top,so something is happening.

Re: Raw thumbnails.
In the same way that thumbnails of jpeg images are shown in file browser but for RAW camera images, they are the data saved by the camera without processing into jpeg.It saves a lot more information for post-processing.The only desktop I can get to work properly is KDE,after insatalling some decoder files.Installing similar files (gnome-raw-thumbnailer) for cinnamon and (Tumbler-plugins-extra) for xfce just do not work.I have gone round in circles on the internet and tried various 'fixes' but all seem to be out of date or just do not work for me.
Can anyone give me a clue how to follow what happens when a file browser opens and what subsequent actions get carried out,a trace if you know what I mean.

Re: Raw thumbnails.
i had issues with x265 video thumbnails so i deleted the .thumbnails folder and created one then delete ALL in .cache and rebooted not sure if they work for raw images.

Re: Raw thumbnails.
Can't help with a trace as to why a raw thumbnail won't display, but as a bit of info on raw files I can display them as thumbnails on Mint Mate 18.
The raw file type I am using is a CR2 for a canon camera. I have PIX installed, which I use to import the files, and Rawtherapee, for processing the files.
I did read somewhere that 'dcraw' is useful to have installed when importing raw files, it's available in Synaptic, I don't have it installed myself as my system appears not to need it.
In Rawtherapee there is a list of file types that are supported. To see them click of Preferences, top right hand corner of the RT window, them click on the File Browser tab.

Re: Raw thumbnails.
I,ve managed to sort it by deleting /usr/share/thumbnailers/gnome-raw.thumbnailer script and replacing with a similar script calling ufraw.

Re: Raw thumbnails.
I'm on Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3 Sylvia
I have a Canon REBEL T6i and I shoot in RAW. I used the command listed below provided by GitHubGist (https://gist.github.com/h4cc/13450db3d4a7457f9b38). After the install I reopened the directory with the RAW files and I could now see the thumbnails.
sudo apt-get install gnome-raw-thumbnailer ufraw-batch
