I'm running an old DELL computer with 1.9 gigabites of RAM and a pentium dual core processor, and have been having a lot of freezes and other problems with linux cinnamon mint 17.3 64 bit. For a more lightweight version of mint, should I ... 1. go back to an older version, like 17.1 or 16? 2. just use an older kernel? 3. change my desktop from cinnamon to xfce or mate-- if so, what desktop is best? 4. use a 32 bit build instead OR 5. some combination of these? 6. scrap mint in favor of a more lightweight linux build?

Also, do I have to do a fresh install to change my system over to using fewer resources/RAM or is there a way to take the recommended action without starting all over again?

Install Linux Mint 18 Xfce. The lightweight champion.
No need to select the 32-bit edition: 64-bit should do just fine. A clean installation is your best option: don't do an in-place upgrade.
After installing it, apply these safe speed tweaks:

A fresh install is always the best option: cleaner, technically better, and even faster.throatgorge wrote:thank you, do I have to do a fresh install, or can I upgrade?
The only exception is upgrading *within* a series (like the 17 series). But don't upgrade from one series to another.

linux mint mate edition uses about 350MB at startup provided you disable some startup options like the mint welcome/upload/update/blueman/screensaver
